I know this should be in dogs, but since i've never actually ventured in there now does not seem the time. I had my 5yo deerhound X put to sleep today, it came completly out of the blue, and has yet to sink in properly. The house now seems very quiet and empty. On saturday he went out for his walk, and being part deerhound, he chased a deer. He eventually returned home hoping on 3 legs. Over the evening the leg swelled, so first thing Sunday morning we took him to the emergency vet. They thought it was a bad infection from a cut in his paw, so had lots of antibiotics and painkillers. Today Rang was still no better, so took him to our own vet, who immediatly took admitted him for an xray. The xray found my poor dog had bone cancer and his bone had been eaten away, and resembled a mush. The vet said they could amputate the leg and put him on a course of chemo, but them we would be looking at a maximum of 6 months if he was lucky. So we made the decision to have him pts. As soon as he saw me he started crying and he was put to sleep in my arms. My poor poor big dog, he was the most loyal and gentle dog in the world. He was my best friend. I no longer know what to write, I can't belive what has happened over the last few hours. I am in a complete state of shock.

So RIP my bestest friend, we had 5 happy years together.

Big ((((((((((hugs)))))))))))) to you.
What a terrable shock for you. But atleast you didn't let him suffer. Once the pain passes you will be able to remember the fit, well, happy dog you had a few days ago and know you did the right thing letting him go before he suffered to much.
RIP Rang

What a gorgeous dog! Im very teary now.

RIP Rang. You are comfortable now.

Big hugs Charlimouse. Its never easy losing a pet. They become part of the family and its just as painful when they leave us.

I will be thinking of you. x

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have actual tears running down my face as I type this. He looked a gorgeous dog and he was very lucky to have you as his owner as you thought of him and not yourself when making that awful decision. His last outing chasing the deer was a fitting last journey, RIP and may you chase deers for evermore Rang. xx

So sorry to hear of your loss, what a beautiful lad. What a terrible shock for you but I hope it will be some comfort eventually to look back and realise you have done the kindest thing for him, rather than trying to gain a few more months which would have been more for your benefit than his. Thinking of you, I know the pain you are feeling.

What a handsome hound, love the sleepy upside down pic. I know exactly how you feel as we lost our little Sophie (ESS) a couple of weeks ago after a very short illness. They become such a huge part of you and it is absolutely heartwrenching when they leave. Just take comfort from knowing he is at peace and you made the very best decision for him. Thinking of you x

How terribly sad and what an awful shock to lose him so quickly. He looks like he had a very happy life with you albeit one cut cruelly short. RIP Rang and hugs to you.

JDx

sorry to be awful.why didn,t you give him the chance.Poor dog was only 5.It is surprising what nice things could have happened,if I only you gave him the chance. My vet recommened I have Jezabell put to sleep after she refused to get up.I gave her the chance of life, and she is so happy today. Why is it people take the advice of the vet.Don,t you have a gut feeling.Life is precious don,t throw it away.Sorry to be awful.Your dog could still have had plenty of joy and love to give to you,but you chose not to give your best freind a chance.

What an incredibly insensitive post. If the best scenario for Rang was amputation to give him at best 6 months more I totally agree with the OPs decision. To keep him going would have been totally selfish and would be a classic case of putting the owner before the dog. He may have been only 5 but he had obvoiusly had a happy life, he was chasing deer a couple of days ago. Far better that than going through the pain and trauma of an amputation for just a few months more.

He looked a wonderful dog, I'm sorry to hear of your sad news, he obviously led a happy and active life right up until the end, you did the right thing. (((hugs)))

Many years ago we lost our beautiful, gentle Irish Wolfhound X "Spud" to the same thing. We thought that he had sprained a joint whilst running, we were devasted when we found out what was really causing it.

We too had the option of amputation, but we really couldn't put him through that and made the decision to PTS. It broke our hearts, but you have to do what's best for the dog, which is exactly what the OP did. I can't believe that someone would be so heartless as to have a crack at the OP for doing what was right.

So sorry for your loss, RIP Rang. It sounds like you gave him a wonderful life, and so brave of you to make this decision for his benefit.

Jezebell - I'm presuming from the OP's description that Rang had osteosarcoma. Amputation doesn't alter survival time for this, just takes the source of the pain away - mean survival time WITH amputation is 119 days. Yes the OP could have opted for amputation, but it would have involved a long surgery with a long, painful recovery, for what is effectively an extra 4 months. The OP was acting in Rang's best interests, and IMO he was very lucky to have had such a caring owner prepared to put his quality of life before anything else.
