had my old mare PTS last night. she has been getting stiffer gradually as well as displaying some neurological symptoms, i found her in the morning very wobbly looked like she'd had a stroke or possibly a fall of some sort, called the vet to come in the eve and spent the day spoiling her with food, as she had severe lami in the past she has never been allowed mix of any sort, yesterday she was in heaven as she was given buckets of the stuff, and went with some in her mouth on a beautiful spring day, so rest in peace old girl, you knew when your time was up and i know it was totally the right thing to do and am glad it was such a lovely day.

Aw Hugs for you.

Very sorry to hear that, i always well up when i read storie like yours, i just dread the day! Well done for being so strong for your mare, i don't know how people do it.

I know it comes to all of us, but your post has really moved me this morning. You did exactly the right thing for her, at the right time from what you say. I hope I can do the same when the time comes, with as much courage and selflessness as you.

Sounds like she had a lovely final day and a very caring owner.... I had my old chap PTS on Boxing Day and know how you must be feeling - relief and sadness.... You know you did exactly the right thing and how wonderful to have some time together in the sunshine and for her to go at home in familiar surroundings.

Thinking of you...

Take care, you obviously loved her with all your heart and have done the kindest thing possible for her. I am glad to gave her a special last day. Take care of yourself.

awww thats so sad ....Thats so nice that you where able to give her that . rip little lady .

I am sorry if this is too sensitive for you but im wondering wether you might be able to help . ignore this post if you think its too raw for you .....But when you say she " was displaying some neurological symptoms " ....Could you tell me what these symptoms where ? ....We have a elderly 15.2hh cob that has been in the riding school ever since i can remember, I started at my local riding school when I was 6-7 ... he arrived a number of years later . So hes a right old age, but last week he lost an awful lot of weight , he was shaking all over and he was looking as if he was on an ice rink, kept on slipping

, it wasnt nice to watch. Yo didnt get the vet out

, he thought it was spasmodic colic as he kept on heaving and turning to bit at his stomach ...So it did look like this, but I know just deep down that there is something else .

Sorry for the long post

...but thought you might be able to help, if you find this too raw please dont feel you need to answer xx

Def a decision that is very hard to make and it was the right one! Hugs for you and RIP old lady! Im sure she is having fun in horsey heaven watching down on you! She is at peace now!

So sorry to hear your news. Brings it all back to me as I had my old girl pts in 2005. You are obviously a very caring owner and made absolutely the right decision. So glad you had a good last day together. RIP

I'm so sorry

but what a lovely thoughtful day you gave her.

I'm sat here in tears, but every time I hear a story like this of such a brave and caring owner, it gives me hope that I'll remember all of them when I'm faced with this situation I know it will carry me through.

Thank you so much for sharing your moment with us.

Sad to hear your news.

Well done for doing the best thing for your horse. You are very brave. Hope you feel better soon.

My thought are with you.

My old boy was put to sleep on Tuesday. He had a very similar day to your old girl - beautiful sunshine & lots of yummy food.

I knew it was the right time to say goodbye too but it still doesn't make it any easier.

Big hugs for you and your girl xx

Just to say I am sorry to hear this, and my old girl went the same way, in the field on a lovely day stuffing herself silly on mix - no better way for them to go.

It is a hard decision to make when they are old, but you did the best thing for her and made her last hours as wonderful as she could wish for.

Oh this is such sad news, I'm so sorry to hear this! I too am so glad that it was such a lovely day when Tops went.

You were so kind to your girl , keeping her till old age, not letting her linger, and spoiling her with food at the end. If only every horse could have a happy end like that. What a lovely person you must be.

So sorry to hear this, you really did put her first. Such a nice thing to do spend her last day together, you had time to say goodbye properly.

RIP old girl xx
