It was a very poor example of an Am Bulldog,at first glance to me it looked more like a Dogo Argentino. Macho dogs ,too many, little space, probably no exercise at all,or training, honestly they are only dogs ..so sad but these circs add up to unexpected really.

I thinks its a terrible thing to have happened .. but have to question just what would make the dogs attack a young girl ... possibly that the dogs got a beating every day by a certain object ? & that the young lady accidently knocked it ... ? Then sent the dogs into panic mode ? Could possibly be a real scenario ? Something must have set them off .

It's awful... The Daily Fail are sensationalising as usual.
They do however have pictures of a litter of pups the owner was selling last year from Facebook - sorry but says it all.
They shot 2x Staffies, the Bull Mastiff & an American Bulldog which are not always the most reliable IMO.
It's such a terrible thing to have happened, and I feel desperately sorry for the girl and her family.
Total accident waiting to happen with that combination in a small house.
My poor mum is getting a Bull Mastiff puppy next week, after losing her last boy early February to Lymphoma. She's concerned about other people's attitudes towards her, even though we've never had issues with Bull Mastiffs (puppy will be her 5th)

I would tell your mum not to worry at all. I have two Bullmastiffs and am met with nothing but warm response, however mine are real cuddle monsters and I am an old bird so we really aren't the stereotype of the combination.

Everyone we meet has the sense to realise it is deed not breed. When my current posse go to the kennel in the sky I shall have exactly the same again.

I love my Bullies and they have been well socialised / trained, they have acres to play in and they are model citizens but I never ever put them in the position where anything could go wrong ie never left with small children or unattended when out.

We can only imagine the horror of that poor child's death. Apparently, no crime has been committed. I'm staggered.

I'm not too sure that the breeds of the dogs are actually that relevant. Any 5 dogs which are kept as a pack, and importantly, are without any apparent discipline, are going to present a risk.

I cannot believe the owner isn't being prosecuted for manslaughter at the least.

Alec, my point on the breeds is any 5 dogs will form a pack but any 5 yorkies (for instance) would not be capable of killing someone.

We have 5 dogs knocking around the farm a lot - ours and our brother-in-laws, they are bad news if left to their own devices although it only means hunting, usually rabbits.

Clodagh,

I agree with you, of course it would be unlikely that miniature dogs would be capable of killing a human, but the emphasis of my point was that there was no apparent control. Even were there control in place, I would never leave 5 of my dogs, regardless of breed or type, with an unattended child. Regardless of dog size, 5 dogs and a young child, a child who may well have been an "outsider" to the pack, would be a risk that I wouldn't take.

Isn't it wonderful, being so wise after the event? I continue to think of that child.

Alec.

It's awful. I can't believe that the dog's owner is getting away with it.

I'm with Alec on this. I can't understand why the dog's owners left her alone with the dogs. I have four small dogs (sometimes five, if I'm dog sitting for my sister) and I wouldn't leave them alone with someone they didn't know well.

Poor, poor girl.

Thanks BBH, the puppies are from an accredited breeder who breeds for temperament.
My mums knows the breed, having had 4 prior to this puppy, and never had a bad one.
She's a fit 67, and the breeder has already put her in touch with some decent puppy training groups, and would like her to show him - which I think is a good thing as it will get him out and about. Plus he will be exposed to my neices and nephews (supervised, on a very regular basis), my labrador who's safe as houses and will be at the local town & park every day (rather than the fields at home) as part of his education & socialisation.

Regards this poor girl, it's absolutely dreadful, and my heart sinks when the press focus on the breed rather than the circumstances. Although they have quoted a neighbour saying she never took the dogs out because she was on Incapacity benefit (which I hope gets reviewed, seeing as she was able to breed puppies, and the work involved in keeping that up)

I'm also amazed she cannot be prosecuted. The law is very wrong if thats the case, however I assume the family could go after her via a civil lawsuit, but we'd all end up paying as it would clearly be defended via legal aid :-(

Just awful all round.
