Hey everyone, hope you and your horses are all ok.

Gawd i havent been on here for ages.....

Well where to start.... Ive still got Harley hes nearly 3 now cant believe how quick hes growing up lol. I have owned him since he was 6 months old, hes such a sweetie. Got him gelded just after he turned 2.

Hes been living out 24/7 with other horses from when i bought him.

I am now thinking of moving him onto a yard with 5 other horses, its a nice and calm yard.

Hes very good to catch, lead, back up, pick his feet up etc on our field,.... but i feel it might be time now to get him used to a stable yard enviroment where he can get used to being tied up, lead to the field/brought in, rugs, things going on, good to have an outdoor for when i start long reining him this summer.

Im abit worried about how will he react to a stable yard because hes aways lived out..... he did go to a stable yard and went in a stale the day that he was getting gelded but the vet ended up wanting him to be done in the outdoor.

Im just wondering what your thoughts/advice would be?? I think im probably worrying for no reason and he will probably adapt really well.

Thankyou xxxx

Our lad is 2 and a bit (3 in Sept) and had a foot abscess between xmas and new year. He had never ever been in except occasionally coming in to have a feed in an open stable.
He had to come it as it was icy and wet and his foot was really nasty.
He is a big lad and can be bolshy at times. We were dreading it.
He was fine! He did stress for an hour or so but settled with his feed and hay. He stayed in completely for 5 weeks. He was very chilled and well behaved. I gave him some Zylklene Equine for the first 10 days which I really think helped take the edge off him. I think it did him the world of good actually, he is out again now and will be until he is backed, unless he is injured/ill again.
I would just go for it if you think the yard is good for you both.

Thankyou for writing back to me hunni. I think i am going to move him onto the yard, prob be best doing it now while hes young.
Aww poor lad, im so glad he settled down and that his foot got better. I think we must worry more than them sometimes lol.
I hope your horse doesnt get ill/injured again hunni and i wish you both well for the future. Would you let me know how you get on with backing him etc.

Take care hunxxxx

Oh i forgot to mention that Harley has started to nip again and he likes to have the leadrope in his mouth.... he started to nip last year but then stopped but now hes started again.
I dont agree in smacking them, i read somewhere that when he goes to nip/bite for me to tap him on his leg so ive been doing that for the last week or so but hes still doing it. I hope he will stop doing it soon because he really is a sweet lad and i dont think he means to hurt me. He just seems to like to mess with things alot.

Do you think hes teething??

Thankyou xxxx

No I think he's taking the mick!

:D:D Yep mine tries that too - I am afraid he get gets a quick elbow in the jaw or a very sharp NO. I don't hit him on the face with my hand but bringing my elbow up quickly seems to put him off. I also do not allow him to chew the lead rope. I am not sure if teething is the right description but I do think young horses can be "mouthy". He likes to play with things but I would prefer "things" not to be me or extensions of me (lead rope).

I was given a really good tip (which I've used and it works) to stop nipping - pull their whiskers, the ones on their chin. They don't see your hand coming as it's underneath, so don't get headshy, it doesn't hurt lots but it definitely confuses them enough that they stop.
