So after 9 months of working at it, i'm just a failure at keeping my legs still at rising trot. I assume I just can't keep from pushing off the stirrups at least a little bit. My legs go flying every time.

So, i'm thinking of doing some stirrupless boot camps on the lunge line. Obviously can't push off my stirrups if they aren't there.

But my question is, will that really help me? Are the mechanics transferable back to stirrup work? Right now i'm a disaster at posting without my stirrups. I just barely get out of the saddle and double bounce ect. So if i practice it alot on the lunge line, and get reasonably good at posting without stirrups. Is that going to help me when i go back to using my stirrups and get me posting more from the knee enough so that my legs won't shoot forward??

Are the mechanics of posting without stirrups and a correct post with stirrups the same? (except of course the stirrup adds balance and lets you transfer a little body weight to help).

I just can't believe how bad i am at posting. I'm just a failure.

I've finally started to develop a feel for the contact to get him on the bit. But my posting is so bad and unbalanced that he can't really go forward and can't be pleasant and makes him want to come off the bit very often.

I can't believe how bad i am at posting, but it is true. Riding every day doesn't really help. I just perfect more and more my bad way of posting and my legs can't stay still.

Perhaps the fact that I can't post without my stirrups really at all. I mean not enough to ride horsey in a circle without him putting his ears back and wanting to cut in or towards the gate because of all the bouncing around going on, on his back.

So hopefully doing stirrupless trot on the lunge will be the answer. Because at this point it is clear that I could practice rest of my horses life riding around with stirrups and I just not going to get it. I've tried every approach.

It may help u.. But I think it's easier at first to use your stirrups until u get rise & trot perfectly.. Try & explain to me ur sitting position & then how u rise & trot & I'll see if I can help :-)

My rising trot was/is pretty rubbish too! I looked up some videos on YouTube randomly one day and actually found them really helpful! There are some Heather Moffat ones and enlighteneduk, some of them are on a simulator which really helped to explain it and I would quite like to try a simulator lesson now. Don't worry its not just you :-)

I saw that heather moffett simulator video too. Makes it look so easy. Something wierd must be going on with me for it to be so hard. Tightness in my legs. Or incorrect thigh leg position or something. One thing i've realized lately is that my calf/ankle have very hard time stretching downward and rarely do i feel like i have weight going down toward my heel.

I'm trying to learn riding at 40.

You already know that your problem is that you rise from your feet.

The answer is to rise from your knees only, sweeping your hips upward and forward, then remembering to allow the knees to bend as you return to the saddle. Do make sure that in rising trot your upper body is incined slightly forward to take into account the forward movement of the trot.

If you sit too upright you get behind the movement which tends to encourage the riders leg to go forward.

Rising trot without stirrups will help a great deal as you will only be able to lift your body from your knees. It's also very hard work until you are really fit so keep it in small bursts.

Lunge lessons are a great way to improve all parts of your riding.
