Rising trot without stirrups?

Yay, cookies! :D
I'll keep trying :p Need to clear off my treadmill too and start doing more exercise in general, so may print those off and pin them up as something else to do.......

to be honest ive not really tried it apart from at pony club we had to put our legs up like a jockey and trot around if that counts (our feet wernet in the stirrups btw)

Then you're doing it right :D

Oh... :( I'm def gonna try do at least some of those every day!

It is evil, avoid at all costs! :o
However,if you have to,there has been some very good advice given.

I dont have to... Was just interested!

Ohh, I had to do that (stationary!) in my lunge lesson, it was SO SO painful!!

I used to do it ages ago on the lunge as well as trying to stand up on the stirrups and keep my balance (sounds easier than it is, especially if you start adding transitions). I don't think it involved gripping and it was a really good exercise for working inner thights and core muscles (for which, btw, Pilates is brilliant), but I would imagine it's a good idea to have someone on the ground checking you are not putting your body in all sorts of awkward poses.

Standing up in your stirrups is how I teach people to swing their pelvis. With the kids I turn is into Simon Says. They'll be trotting along and I'll say stand up and they have to stay there. It's really quite hard! (it also highlights how many people ride with their stirrups far too long, as it's impossible to do if you can't get over the front of the saddle!)

Why on earth would you want to do that WITHOUT stirrups.

Not only is it bad for your back but you're scissoring the horse in it's ribs!!!

Oh my goodness. I'm going to have to try some of these and I'm dreading it! I'm hoping that just general riding will improve my fitness fairly quickly, or I'm in big trouble... (more to the point, the poor mare will have to put up with me losing my balance more often, which isn't really fair on her).

I'm going to go against the grain here (am def old school and was taught to ride at an army saddle club with emphasis always not to rely on the stirrups). See I don't think that stirrups are there to support the rider's weight, they are there as a foot rest to prevent your legs getting tired. The riders weight is distributed and supported by the seat. Therefore, everything that you can do with stirrups, you should be able to without!

Seriously?

I do work without stirrups every other day (OK sometimes I cheat if I am really tired, but I try to do work without stirrups every other day :D). It's the only way I know of developing an independent seat.

Booboos I think tallyho! meant why would you want to do rising trot w/o stirrups! I do love doing normal no-stirrups work (though canter is still scary!!:o)
