Hi, My son is 2, he loves riding & esp loves trotting, at the moment he just bounces up and down without properly rising, but his pony (an almost shetland) has (i think) a trot that might be almost slow enough to rise to, how on earth do i teach him how to do it? or shall we just keep bouncing until he falls into a rhythm?

thanks
RD

He may struggle depending on how strong his legs are, but I had 2 of F's doing riding trot as toddlers! The easiest way for most is to say 'up down up down up down' as you want them to do it while watching the pony's legs, and to save the pony's mouth, have them hold a neck strap or the front of the saddle. I warn you, the hardest part is chanting up down repeatedly!

Good to see you back here btw!

PMSL! you mean i have to look at flippers legs, shout up/down/up down/ and run in a straight line, all without falling over.... omg, i think i'll be the one struggling,

i'll give it a go & see how we get on!

get him to practice standing up and down in his stirrups while walking around. Literally telling him stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, etc ... Once he has got the hang of it get him to do it while in trot. Try and keep him in some sort of rhythm by repeating 'stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, etc ...'. Doesnt matter if its the same rhythm as the trot. Once he gets used to it them start teaching him rising with the rhythm of the trot and dont worry about diagonals until he has got the hang of everything else first. You might want a helper if you have one otherwise your going to get a sore neck from walking forwards and looking back lol. Good luck!

Oh dear lord.... I forgot who I was talking to. Bung flipper on the lunge at least then you take the walking out of the equation! And maybe just look at one leg, rather than all 4... otherwise he might be rising at lightening speed... just say up everytime the inside fore goes forward, and down every time the outside hind goes back - oh who am I kidding, say 'up down up down up down' repeatedly without paying any attention to legs, he will get the idea. I can do it with a group of 6 small children on different sized ponies and it seems to work ok

I was just trying to be correct!!!

So other than flipper, have you got anything ridable when I come over to visit? Or just the resident nutcases ?

LOL!!!

i have an almost bona fide eventer, (well, we went for a lesson with a new trainer today, he said he was a nice horse, i did some jumping, thats an eventer isn't it?) i am a bit precious about him, so may not let you ride him! Instead.....

I still have Josh, who is actually in a bit of work (thanks to may hair dresser, whom i have traded hair cuts for riding) so he'd be fine for you,

(i still have the delicious Ian, but he is now a nanny to our babies, i just don't have the time to ride him everyday & ride anky & anky is just so easy to take out on my own, so he's in enforced retirement, i'll unretire him when the boys start school!)

Yay Josh!!!! Now he isn't the one who thinks darker patches of tarmac are monsters - was that Pickles? I love the idea of trading haircuts for rides! I will trade you some Hershey for a ride
wink.gif
how's that??? I am dying to meet flipper and watch lil one ride him, how long till the other one gets the bug? Second sh*tland in the works???

Like the idea of a bone fide eventer! Are you going to be hunting this year? I am sure there must be a basket saddle somewhere in your tack room to save on babysitting costs
wink.gif
I'll give eldest a lesson on 'the importance of the safety seat while jumping XC' and one on 'why it isn't a good plan to do what mummy does' when I am over and you will be sorted!

LOL, i'll trade you as many rides as you like for ALL the hershey you can pack!!! (that was pickles!!)

Second pony is in the pipeline, but a proper pony, should do workers, hunting & some baby eventing, as a taster before i get him an FEI pony, then flipper can get passed down to number 2 child! (who has already started riding, but we have a sharing issue) (before being passed on round the neighbours... the pony has a wait list - he's like a handbag!

Number 1 child has no need for a basket saddle, he can already do jumping, (trotting poles) and has properly jumped puddles, as well as sitting on a couple of fairly good bucks... the boy has no fear! (when i actually have to find an FEI pony, i will really regret that i ever started it, Kate & I are planning the team for the 2032 olympics!!

Can you send flipper over on a raft for when my first needs a pony?

I shall raid the airport shop for Hershey, they only allow me 20kg, can you believe that! (my norm is closer to 60kg!) because I am flying cheapy chips airline I can't bring shoes! What are your favourites and I will stuff my jacket pockets with them!!!

I was meaning basket for number 2 chil, not number 1 - I can totally imagine him taking hold of the reins and telling the pony to 'stop being so silly' - he has his grandmother's genes afterall!!!!!

LOL! the cookie one & the peanut one (& the rice crispy one) & reeses cups)

the usual phrases are (always said with a half growl??!!?)

'WALK ON SLIPPY'
'TROT ON SLIPPY'
NO SLIPPY'

he is good at giving him pats, and at telling me to go faster! or to get jumps out!!

I have put a post it note in my purse to remind me!

Yes, mothers are terribly slow, which is why you get them off the lead rope asap. get your mother to put an arena in "for his safety" and then he can't go anywhere! Or just do ride and lead, you'll be fine
smile.gif
I was doing ride and lead at 18 months, so I feel he is rather lagging behind!

The reason he says them with a growl is because you probably do! It is scary how children immitate their mothers!!!

Show him how to go forward and back not up and down.
If you get him to try and sit on the pommel when he rises he will master it very quickly.
Too many people try to get beginners of every age to go up and down, when really, it's forward and back!
I fastened a double bootstrap on to the rings at the front of the saddle and told mine to pull themselves forward with it, that worked well. My daughter was hacking behind my husband on her shetland aged three and cantering in no time.
I always used side or grass reins off the lead though, it eliminated that being pulled over the ponies head!

Yep keep chanting up down, up down. Daisy got it in days ( not blowing my trmpet but she is a natural, I am super critical, but every one who sees her cannt believe how good she is, god I seem big headed)

Any how keep at that, and mybe find a ryme that matches the rythym, some kids dont get it until their posistion is more up right, keep going, but as long as he loves it encourage it, at 2 he just needs to have fun fun fun, and tie a strap to the d rings at the front of the saddle, as henryhorn says it is more forward and back, so make sure his stirrups are not too short.

Good luck, we need more boys
