I was so pleased with myself today. ( that'll teach me🤪). I followed the diversion signs, went 30 minutes out of my way. Totally lost. Used the sat nav., once I had a safe place to pull over. Got to my destination. To find if I'd ignored the road closed signs, I could have picked up my 3 bales of straw from the farm that was just before the road closure....🤣

Reminds me of when we were driving through the Rockies in Canada last year on holiday. Signs ahead said main road ahead was closing for work but there would be a diversion. No problem we thought until someone local pointed out it was a 7 hours detour! We drove like a bat out of hell and got through just before it was closed.

ETA it would be really helpful if, in the Uk, they actually told where the road was closed rather than telling you for miles before. It’s usually miles after where you’re trying to get to.

We had a road closed for roadworks (planned) & then Thames water decided it was the ideal day to sort a week old leak - on the diversion. Carnage.

I don't usually accuse Bucks CC of common sense but when diversion signs are pointing back at each other (yup, really) they did wake up and shout at Thames Water to pack up.

We going to a competition which is about 1 hour 40 mins away. There was a diversion sign near the venue , we doubled back on ourselves and eventually were so far away we’d not be ready in time for our slot and went home and so the horse had a 3 hour ride in the trailer without actually going anywhere.

PS I forgot to add we later realised there was a 10 minute diversion we could have taken !

In town a few years back there was a pre planned diversion which took 44 ton trucks through residential back streets where parked cars made the road single width. After a day of complete chaos, the police told them to get the road open.
.

I followed the diversion for a road closure last week, having driven past several signs right up to the barrier because I didn't know if it was closed before my turn or not. It was lucky I knew where I was because half way, the signs just stopped. A stranger to the town wouldn't have had a clue.

When we were going to Birmingham airport earlier this year we found that the road we needed would be closed overnight.
We found a new route on our map and Mr M was well prepared for the diversion.
The signs said Follow the ‘diamond’
We found 2 diamonds amongst a collection of triangles and circles!
After driving a circular route which took 1/2 an hour and took us away from the airport Mr M decided to follow the triangles. We got to the airport on time but only because we’d allowed and hour extra for the journey.
If we hadn’t realised the road would be closed beforehand we would have missed our flight.

I pulled out of our (dead end) lane to a road closed sign this morning, spotted a neighbour dog walking and asked him where it was… no closed road 🤦‍♀️

…so for revenge I stole the traffic cone on the way home for mounted games practice 🤣

Folks, I recommend this site

It’s where any company that Carrie’s out roadworks must upload details. But be careful - emergency works don’t have to be uploaded before they start digging.

You can view today, or in the future. Shows you the official diversion, and let’s you check your own diversion for other works.

yes, where we found the airport road was closed.
Our local county council has it’s own roads closed page too
