Road nails................can they lose their tungsten tip?

Right at work so have nothing better to do than worry!!!!!

Sparks was shod about 2 weeks ago and had a single road nail fitted to the outside of each hind shoe. Last night when I picked her feet out, I noticed that the road nail on her left hind was flat, yet the nail on her right hind still has its tip.

So is it possible the nail could have lost its tip or has she really just worn one flat??? - We have just got back from a week on Exmoor so she has done more road work than normal along with mountaineering and splashing through bogs!!!! etc...

She seems sound and her shoes don't appear to have any uneven wear (expect the one missing tip), so it it possible it could have just lost its tungsten tip?

Obviously I will discuss with my farrier when she is next shod, but wondered if anyone could shed any light in the mean time.

Yes they can loose there tip.. unfortunatly it is easy done.. It is also easily done with road studs too..

Less likely with studs are they are hammered into the stud hole while off the foot and then cooled to allow the holes to retract.

The only thing i will say is they, the tungston is alot stronger than steel and for the horse to wear down the tungstun tip it would be quite something, if the nail is smooth, is there an indent in the centre? the tungston pin must have been lost and then the nail worn.

Phew...........I was hoping this was the case.

There is a small darker bit in the middle of the nail where I assume the pin once was.

I have stud holes, so can put road stud in if I need them, but probably won't be doing much road work till she is next shod anyway.

**Trots off to find something else to worry about!!!**

Slightly OT, what exactly are road studs?

My mare has Tungsten nails on the hinds each time, without them she slips. Just interested really!!
