I am still a bit of a newby to studs but am thinking about getting some road studs for hacking over winter but TBH I still find studding up a bit time consuming. So I was wondering, compared to the studs I use to event etc roads studs seem very flat, is it possible or feasible to leave them in 24/7?? My horse is on grass turn out all day and stabled on shavings and rubber matting over night. Is it likely that he could hurt catch or himself with them in or would it unbalance the foot etc to have them in all the time? Or am i being a complete numpty for asking and there is clearly something serious I'm not thinking of here?? :o

I would probably be going for the supastuds at the top of the page at this link

NO!! Absolutely not.

Your horse could easily catch himself with them especially when getting up or down or when lying down.

Also not good idea for foot balance. I would not even be keen to use road studs all the time either. Plus you may think they look flat and smooth now when you ride in them regularly the square bit wears away to leave a really sharp point with the tungsten centre.

My horse has had one road nail in each shoe for the last 6 years. My farrier recommended them as she often slipped badly on roads.
They've never caused any problems, she's not hurt herself in the stable, while rolling or while running around the field.
My experience of them has only been positive.
Hope that helps.

Mine has road nails in and it deffo does make a difference. Do not appriciate the £75 bill for road nails and stud holes, especially as my horse is usually shod every 4 to 6 weeks. Scary especially as a student!

Ha, I'm a student too, luckily my new farrier is a bit cheaper than the previous one (and much better too!).

Thanks all for the advice, I knew you guys would keep me right!! :D
