instead of the gvnt's current idea, would anybody be in favour of abolishing Road Tax altogether, and having a price hike in fuel to cover.
example. £1.50 per litre...the more you use the more you pay...

thereby for the more fuel efficient vehicles the driver would automatically pay less and the "gas-guzzlers" more!!

with of course, the gvnt using the extra revenue to improve the situation on the roads...

BUT they (the Gvnt) shouldnt have it both ways.ie road fund tax AND "Pay-as-You-Drive"!!!!!

Pie-in-the-Sky????

Not sure what the impact on the road haulage industry would be, and the increase in prices would be passed on to the customer. Don't we already pay more duty on fuel than most other countries?

I see, some quick maths based on average mileage and fuel costs suggests to be that in fact an increase of about 10p per litre would balance out for the average driver, based on that it is not so bad

that was my thinking.

i have a 4x4, OH has a 4x4, we have a 7.5T Lorry and a 10 T cattlebox.

take away the tax add to fuel and i think we'd possibly be a few quid up!!

i would be up for that, but that would be too easy for this government!! i think it should only apply to private cars though, or prices of food and services etc would rocket if applied to business vehicles and lorries.

It is the obvious solution. The technology is in place to prevent drivers from filling up if their car has not got insurance or an MOT. The haulage industry would have to receive a discount, but could maybe be encouraged to use double trailers where roads allow.

I think it would be a good idea and would be all for it! We have a 4x4 and a normal more fuel efficent road car. We only use the 4x4 when I am towing/going off road or, if both cars are being used it does the least number of miles between the 2 cars. I NEED my 4x4for my business, and it is used for what it is built for, but I could afford the massive road tax that has been talked about. Increased fuel tax I think would be fair and I would be more than happy to pay that because I know I pollute the environment more with my 4x4, but I feel I use it sensibly. Also little sports cars are just as bad as 4x4's and I haven't heard them being talked about as polluters and having increased road tax! This system would effect them too, so that would be good!

I'll get off my soapbox now....
