JG was the foal slow greying too, they do seem mostly to be related to particular genetic lines in connies and PRE but I don't think why has been identified yet. A friend of mine has a funny looking horse, the best I can come up with is that he is slow greying, he's warmblood.

Wow! That's a super slow 'greyer' JG!

Has anyone worked out why the rate of 'greying out' is so variable? I have wondered if the presence of sooty slows down greying times. My girl doesn't have sooty and as shown above, she greyed out super fast (but of course it meant no pretty dapple grey stage).

lol, dashed if I know. I confess, my slow greying chap DOES have slow greying foals usually - one noticeably grey from a chestnut mare (though not until 3) was the giveaway on HIM being grey. This is a daughter of his at 4 - and she was a chestnut foal.

Here's a PRE horse at 1 year, about 6yrs and 10yrs old:

I had a lady wanting to buy him and insisting he was black: I could have made a lot of money, but I knew he was going to grey. BTW I'm not responsible for his later waistline!
