Hi
I've just started to ride a horse that I was lead to believe was suitable to hunt and possibly event .
I've been riding him for 2 weeks now and started to notice he made a noise in canter and when he's jumped . I thought nothing of it as his owners have said he is all fine .
Yesterday I took him hunting ( which is what I intended to use him for ) and he was making a terrible noise ! then about 45-50 minutes in he started bleeding from his nose

I was VERY worried and got in contact with his owners and they said he 'roars' which i wasnt told 2 weeks ago ....
Can any-one help me and tell me what the actual problem is and what work he will be suitable for ??
Any help would be appreciated , thanks

Roaring is usually caused by paralysis of the left side of the larynx. This means that as the horse breathes in, only half of his airway opens, hence he makes a noise and struggles with harder work. To find out how severe it is you would need to have him scoped (tube in airway) to see the extent of the paralysis and confirm that is the cause.

If he was bleeding out of his nose and made that much noise I wouldn;t want to go hunting on him, I'm afraid. I'd want to get a vets opinion on how much work was suitable, but if he was struggling, I would be cautious about pushing too far, especially with the bleeding.

Ahh no problem at all about the hunting , was slightly more concerned about horsey last night and rather pissed of that I wasnt told that he has done it before and they just let me carry on !! Have tried to talk to owner but shes having none of it "!!
Thanks 4 the info .

Yes sort of an informal loan he's a friends horse she said I could take over his riding due to me being horseless

, (due to my hunter going lame and 3yo being a a 3yo ) But was said to be suitable for hunting and intro/pn eventing , which he clearly is not.
So am going to chat to his owner and say i cant carry on with him

I think you're wise. I'd be very worried about doing any work on him that exerted him in any way.

Bit sad really that they can't be honest about him......

Where are you based?

Yes very sad ,as he's a lovely horse and if he didnt have this problem would loved to have kept him
