Are they worth a Visit?

I'm heading down to York at the end of the month and I'm thinking about doing a bit of shopping whilst there. A tack shop is a complete luxury for me so will be like a child in a sweet shop. Are there any other tack shops nearby?

Rideaway is based near York. YO61 1EH. I haven't been for years but certainly spent enough when I did go!

I don't mind Robinsons, it depends what you're after really. You won't find a huge amount of really good tack, but they have decent clothing ranges and bits and bobs.

You won't find a ton of high quality stuff at robinsons but you can spend a fortune bargain things and bits and bobs. Lots of grooming things, jump poles/wings etc, clothing, rugs, cheap tack, hi viz stuff etc etc.

It's the only place that my boyfriend can find mens jods near us!!

I've been a few times and they have some things worth picking up :)

I traveled from Gloucestershire to Cardiff to visit their store. I was very disappointed. May be worth a visit if you just want low end /every day stuff but there's much better places imo.

Snap- I got the train from Bristol. Had no signal and had to ask for directions when I got off to a platform in the middle of nowhere!

Was very disappointed too.

I've used the Basingstoke one, and while I agree there is a load of tat, if you open your eyes and don't take it all at face value and take a really good look at what's on offer there are always bargains to be had. Most recently for me I got an unlined turnout for H on wet days that was less than half price. It's not a high end brand, but the fit is good and it is actually waterproof!

Rideaway is great for general stuff but I really like r&r for better brands/more luxury items-maybe plan a trip to both?! They are both close to york and easy to get to.

Basingstoke is my local tack shop, I go there for feed and maybe pick up some cheap jods in the sale but I wouldn't rate it for shopping, especially since its been taken over by Sports Direct! its a right mess now, with cheap stuff chucked in piles on the floor!! its alright if you don't want quality tack but its not like it used to be! rug selections good though!

I recently went to my local one in Hunslet (Leeds) & won't go again. It had what I needed but never experienced (lack of) customer service like it. Literally more life in a morgue

I like R&R and Rideaway. I'm not a massive fan of Robinsons; it's all a bit cheap and naff.

If you are traveling further afield, Beaver Horse Shop near Harrogate is lovely. It's ram packed and the customer service is brilliant. You can make a morning of it and go to Bettys at Harlow Carr after :D

Robinsons is now owned by Sport Direct. They are based in Nottinghm & in the media for the use of slave labour (actual slave labour). Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. All info available online. Google Sports Direct slave labour.

Basingstoke is my localish one also and its gone to crap recently since they were taken over. I used to always go in for 1 thing and come out spending loads now I go in for 1 thing and can't even find that half the time, the shelves always seem empty now and they haven't had their rug sale like last year yet so I gave up waiting and went to a horsey car boot in Southampton instead and got Ted most of his winter wardrobe for a bargain but I seem to get several emails a day about some new sale.

I recently purchased some faulty riding boots from Robinsons, I had a real fight on my hands to get a refund as Sports Direct have a no refund policy, I was lucky and managed to get a refund because the young girl agreed they were faulty and let me have a refund. However, while I was looking around I heard her manager telling her off for refunding me, because the fault was cosmetic, and thus in sports direct's eyes the boots weren't faulty. Personally I don't think decorative laces should snap and fall out in 2 weeks and I was entitled to a refund!

Be warned if you buy anything there is a strict NO REFUND POLICY, which seems very unfriendly to me!

No wonder Sport Direct have a No Refund Policy, how do you think Mike Ashley became a billionaire? The bad press they have had over the last few years has shown that they are a company who have no regard for their staff & blatantly flout employment law, paying less than the minimum wage. They terrorise their warehouse staff with threats of dismissal for being late, taking too long for WC break etc.

He purchased the various trademarks he sells in his stores, Donnay, Slazenger, Dunlop, Lonsdale etc & once he owned the trade marks, which were once respected & quality clothing companies he could then embroider their logos into the cheap inferior clothing he sells in his outlets. He even pre prints the price slashed labels he attaches to the clothing, trying to convince you that the tatty T shirt with the Donnay Logo was originally priced at 70% more?

In short the stock in Robinsons will get cheaper & more poorer quality now he has his sticky fingers on it. I know I won't bother with them again. :(

Eventually parliament stepped in & call Ashley in for a chat & he expects people to believe he had no idea that they were paying less than the minimum wage........ what a crock!!

Ashley only cares about himself & how much money he can make. He bought Newcastle FC & put adverts for his company all around the ground. He pays nothing to the club for this advertising & it gets seen all over the world when matches are televised. He is a parasite on society, a wealthy parasite but a parasite no less.

If you're off York way out then I'd say R&R and Rideaway are closer to where you're going, carry better ranges and better quality stuff, that said I live 15 minutes from the Leeds Robinsons and have picked up the odd bargain from their sale rails, just find their selection of day to day stuff eg shampoo, fly spray etc a bit poor (they are good for bargain rugs and cheap jods and such though). Also if you're looking for good quality Foxes at Wetherby may be worth a visit.

Yes, just up the road from me. Shocking company. Don't buy owt from em.

There have also been proven cases of families forced into labour in the fact that they get searched leaving the warehouse & don't get paid for the time they have to wait. It's a big thig here in Nottingham, he is a very unwelcome person.
