Anyone know any horses by him and what they are like competing? I know Mary King's horse, King Gem is by him and is obviously doing well competition wise but I have heard that some are either really hyper/barmy, or compete wusses that give up.

I used to work with his owner/rider and worked with a variety of his stock.
They are all undoubtedly awesome jumpers but seem to find it hard to co-ordinate all the phases together when out eventing. Nearly all of them seem to be extremely tricky characters in the dressage arena but on the other hand nearly all of them can be guaranteed to jump a superb ( but strong) clear on the XC !!

Interesting. That explains alot. Thank you. Did you come across any that just give up, got tired and couldn't be bothered to try to get to the end of the xc on a one day?

Not as such but-there was one particular character that threw in the towel regularly but that was on the SJ not on the XC. Sj he had pole after pole down when he did not feel like it even though he was jumping with great technique and in a good rythym he would not mind brushing through 10 fences.
Was talking to Dan Jocelyn recently about them as he has a few RK's, both he and his wife were quite ambivalent about RK's in general saying that their brains and temperments never seemed to be easy.

I know the owners' neices and I think at one piont they had at least 1 Rock King horse however I can't remember which one. So I am no help what so ever.

I ride a horse by Rock King, he is sharp and quirky but incredibly talented. You either get everything or nothing.

Interesting thanks all. Rock King himself I have heard had a brilliant temp, very good, brave competing and was quiet. But his offspring seem to have taken his sires temp.

Hi,

My daughter has a gelding by Rock King who is an absolute star. She started riding him as a 13 year old and now at 16 competes with him in show jumping and dressage. He can have his quirks when handling him but I think that may be more the thoroughbred than who his dad was.
Saying that he is still the most laid back thoroughbred I've ever handled.

I have had 4 mares by RK- 2 of them 4* level, other one intermediate/** (was a too careful to go higher) and now showjumps to high level. The 4th beacause of her lovely easy nature and bloodlines is a broodmare (she is so laidback and easy!) A couple have had complex personalities in some ways that need understanding but will try their hardest for you and the sweetest, intelligent horses.
