Hi, could anyone suggest a feed for a laid back mare who is a good doer? I feel she just needs a little more ooomph. Currently on Happy Hoof and LoCal. Thanks!

Try some Dengie naked oats - you only need a couple of handfuls

Now why didnt I think of that? Thank you, will try some of those, shouldn't put on too much weight with that. I have always had the opposite problem and needed non-heating feeds for my other horses!

H&H did an article a while back on starches

Remember starch is energy and any energy fed in excess to requirements will exaggerate your horse's natural character, so an excitable thoroughbred will become more excitable and a laid-back cob will become even lazier

Worth bearing in mind! If your horse needs more energy because its current ration isn't enough for the work being done then adding oats might be the way forward for your horse, but if its just not sharp enough it might also be a schooling issue. We have a Danish WB at work that gets a scoop of oats a day and is lazy as sin!! He's got energy when he wants to use it, but we could feed him 3 scoops of oats a day and it wouldn't make him sharp!!

Oil and fibre. I used to feed my horse all the starchy competition feeds, and he just got jittery and nervy. He is now on Alfa Oil, and Allen and Page power and performance (high oil/fibre, low starch), and is forward, but relaxed

Thanks for the replies. I was feeding her Outshine as well, but she doesnt like it and manages to eat everything but the Outshine balls! I wouldn't say she is lazy, comments at the weekend were "rather flat" and that is how she felt. I put it down to the fact that she had been vaccinated a few days before and wasnt finishing her feeds, think she was a bit off, but in general I think she could do with a bit more energy. Hmm choices, choices!

i found oats didnt work on my boy - also have weight issues so have to be carefull and found spillers instant energy really good, gives him the sparkle he needs without blowing his brain :-)
