I dont know what to do he came in on friday holding his leg (back right a bit like a dog) up in the air he was not to bad so we popped him in his stable and he seemed much better in the morning he spent the next day in not impressed and seemed fine. Turned him out in his muddy field and he seems short again yesterday evening and this AM i have turned him out. He has not cut himself and there is no swelling anywhere, i have poked him in his back as I initally thought his GF may have beaten him up anyone have any experience with this. I have got some bute so was going to give him some tonight and maybe call a vet (as they will only give me bute for a couple of days) what do you think?? he is very happy in himself eating loads and being very bossy about life in general!

You need a vet - something like this shouldnt be masked with bute until the vet has had a look.
Our youngster was like this last week and it was a tiny mud fever crack about 1/2" long. He was non weight bearing and fell over twice whilst geting him in for the vet. He has had a 5 day course of antibiotics and special cream and is now ok but my vet said had we left it, he would have developed cellulitis/ lymphangitis within 24 hours with a far more serious prognosis.

He did also point out that baby horse was being a complete drama queen!

I have called they have told me to give him bute till the end of the week and if no better they will come out. They said that he may have bruised his foot by the way he is walking?!?!

OMG what kind of vets do you have???? Are they physic or something, how can they possibly know that is what your horse is suffering from. That is a very unprofessional approach. After all they only have your explanation of your horses symptoms, you may not spot something that could be deemed serious by an experienced veterinary surgeon. By the same token you may have spotted something worth urgent investigation which if left could turn worse. I am not trying to scare you but I think your vets 'diagnosis over the phone' is terrible.

I use a vertinary hospital which is the best in my area?!?! starting to wonder Going to get him in wash him off and try to find something i have called the farrier waiting for him to call me back he is very good so imagine he will be in touch later. I have to book holiday for the vet to come so trying to sort /2 a day off this week to get them out. He is weight bearing on it but not like if he was sound definately not as bad as it was on friday but my friend checked on him in the evening and he had improved or would have got them out then.

It could be an abcess but I would have expected it to get worse not to get slightly better from Friday to now. Your farrier will be able to have a bang with his hammer around the nail holes, and put pincers on his soles to see if there could be an abcess present. My first horse went from slightly lame to almost non weight bearing hopping lame in less than a day. When the vet asked me to walk poor pony (big 17.1hh who got bullied in field by 11.2hh) out of the stable to assess him he was very suprised to see the state of him as he thought I was exaggerating when I said he was very lame!

well that is what I thought about the lame thing. Maybe he has bruised his foot?!?! I dont know farrier has called me back (love my farrier) he told me to wash all his legs down and if i find heat he will be there at 7am to sort it out. He knows what a delicate flower Rocky is! I will let you know but if no better tomorrow and no heat going to insit the vets some on thursday!

Wingalls don't normally cause a problem if they are already existing wingalls. All wingalls are is a distension to the tendon sheath which causes fluid to build up - hence the puffiness. If they are preexisting in your horse I would hazard a guess that it could be a sprained tendon sheath which is what my horse had. Box rest and injections into the tendon sheath helped with that.

never had a problem before at all. he does have wingalls he is on box rest at the moment and is on bute till friday he did look a lot better yesterday. Vet said to keep him in on bute till firday then I will take him off the bute and see if he is okay if not he will be seeing the vet on monday and will be on box rest till then, poor man he is not happy about this at all!!

My instructor thought he has sprained something as he over reached and pulled his shoe off (front, lame behind) I have had horses with wingalls before but they have never been a problem. Am I doing the right thing by keeping him in?? Vet said that they would give him bute for a couple of days first as he may have just twisted his ankle?!?!

So basically lots of people have told you what could be wrong with him - but a veterinary professional hasn't looked at him?

Fingers crossed and hope for the best then

the vets do not want to come out until he has had a course of bute as they said to me that is the first thing they would do as they is nothing obviously wrong with him and he is getting better with stable rest. I asked them to come out earlier this week

I would suggest the first thing the vet would do would be to examine the horse - and then decide on the best course of action.

I'm sure he's fine, and it's nothing more than an abcess brewing.

Let us know how it goes.
