Finally got to ride Copper today, he lost a shoe a couple of days after I got him and was quite footsore until I got a new one on him on Sunday. Gave him til today and he seems right so I cracked on!

I took him up to the round pen and let him trot around (he was FASCINATED by the mini shetland) he trotted like one of them floaty dressage horses, very purdy indeed. Slapped bridle and saddle on, he's quite chewy and gnashes his teeth a lot with the bit so thinking we need teeth done asap. Saddle went on fine and he settled ok as soon as that was on, I led him round for a minute but he was so chilled that I dragged the mounting block in and hoiked meself up. He stood like a star, asked for walk on and we walked. Asked for trot a couple of minutes later and ended up having to pony club kick and shout TROT OOOON :D like a Barbara Woodhouse parody! Bless, it took him a little while to work it out. He trotted then on both reins but was a little sluggish, didn't feel uncomfortable in any way but I was in a stock saddle so he probably needs a bit more contact from my legs I think.

Took a crop and as soon as I used a tap of it he worked straight away, he's obviously always been ridden with one. Asked for canter and he was much more knowledgeable about that! Calm and quiet in all ways though, what a little superstar.

SO... I will be hacking him mainly for the next few weeks to get him used to my leg/voice/rein commands and getting to know him and then I will start the "dressarge" nonsense  to get him working properly before I attempt some small fences. So far, polocrosse-wise, he MAY not be sharp enough but as he doesn't mind things waving around his head or me leaning down his shoulder, as long as his responsiveness improves he could play.

Does anyone have any hints about improving responsiveness while hacking?

If not then I will start bombing around and making him jump 2 metre fences as that gets people commenting! ;)

Lol, sounds good :D (the day, not the two metre fences....)

I like to put interesting stuff out in the school to get the horse's attention. That plus lots of transitions and changes of direction - works with the Dizz so long as one doesn't go mad

For now, on the hacking front, I'd chill and see how he goes :D. We used to have to do all our schooling on hacks, not that Dizz was allowed to do a lot back then, but we used road markings etc. as markers for change of gait or speed, rougher ground to get them thinking about where feet were going, streams, etc.

Thanks Mrs M! As for the rest of you- get your heads out of the blooming ice cream for a minute and pat me on the back/slap me in the face! I feel like a right troll now.... :( You'd best give me some ice cream...

Sorry, I was stuffing my face with pasta (but wish I had ice cream)!

He sounds lovely indeed... are there any photos of him or did I miss them?

I have no useful hints I'm afraid as I'm pretty clueless. I just wanted to say "hooray!" to you really, always lovely to get a new horse and he turns out to be sensible. :) Not that I'd know what that feels like... :p

He sounds lovely :) He might all of a sudden wake up once he's learnt how much fun polo crosse is my mounted games pony was really quiet but as soon as he knew he was practising or competing he was nuts :D

Worse comes to worse give him some fizzing up food :)

Thanks HW and K! I have piccies, I'll just find em again...

He's already on fizzing up food- he's lost a little cover over his ribs since he arrived and started being an outdoor horse so he's on topline conditioning cubes, balancer and outshine, along with some really rather good grass I must say (although I'm not sure he knew what the soft green stuff was initially!).

Let's hope he soon realises that when I say go I mean go NOW! etc. He needs to start listening to where my body is pointing and where my hands are so plently of hacking and meandering all over the road (when no cars obs). He really is such a nice boy, that's the 2nd ex racer I have bought at Ascot and the second one I have said "What a REALLY nice horse" about. Pleased? Oh yes!

I love the white socks :D They make him look very smart, but I bet there a pain to keep clean :p
If you ever need anymore fizzing up mix we gave my horse competition mix and oats that gave him more energy. Keep us updated with his progress :)

Y'know what? I don't even try! Not worth the hassle, I will deal with them when I compete and not before! Although I'm rather dreading the onset of mud fever weather :(
