Rodeo Photos; If You Don't Like Rodeos - Don't Look!

Nooo.......I'm glad you didn't "keep your mouth shut".

Enjoyed "chatting". Kept me alert whilst waiting for the washer to finish.

Well; knowledge, real knowledge I mean, is surely the only way anyone can have an intellectual debate?

I can tell you haven't been to a rodeo by a number of the things you previously said; and I'm really not too convinced of any equine experience you may have because of the comments you made regarding eventing and showjumping.

You say you like Parelli - I've been to some Parelli ranches out West - very interesting and worth seeing the cattle horses working; I doubt you would see what you are imagining though.

Ahh.....but we're not 'debating', as I said in my first post it's a genuine question. I'm not prentending I am some sort of anti-rodeo spokesperson but based purely on what you admit yourself - the horses are spurred and have that belt on to irrate them that seems to be 'cruel', certainly unkind and its that contridiction that makes me wonder how horsey people enjoy to watch and thats the question that you haven't answered
wink.gif
.

I also have acknowledged that there are dubious training methods in many disaplines eventing and sj included but none the less its the fact that it's the cruelty aspect that people pay to see in a rodeo. Oh and you are wrong on both counts that I have no equine experience or been to a rodeo

Brilliant photos Tia.

We are just waiting until there is one closer to us before we go, but go we shall and are all looking forwards to it with an open mind. As always, I will be reserving judgement until I have had a taste.

For those that are interested, the Calgary Stampede is on until July 17th (I think) and is on TV everynight here, so maybe you can get coverage in the UK too. I was watching last night and there could be no complaints made about the physical condition of any of the animals on view. Apart from that they were all very well covered! The Chuck wagon racing is more likely to cause welfare comments than the bucking horses. Now.......those are brave men!

When I went to Colorado I was gutted that the rodeo season had just finished as I do so wanted to go and watch one.

The photo's are great, I hear the horses and bulls aren't hurt and it is the strap at the back which makes em buck as they want it off.

Seeing your photo's makes me still want to go and watch a live rodeo. Those cowboys are soooooooo brave...

If I ever go to Canada I will make sure I go when the Calgary Stampede is taking place. What a huge variety of events, it really looks like there is something for everyone. Good link, Thanks.

Enfys are you near Erin, Exeter, London? I know you are fairly close to Mississauga (that's where the championships are held - so VERY big!). There should be one somewhere near you.

Try and do as I do, get right up to the chutes and then you will have a clear view of what exactly is going on - my experiences of this, as previously said, are that nothing untoward goes on. There is no spurring of the animals in the chute or once they are released - they just buck, because that's what they've been trained for.

Tyebo - not once did I mention cowboys spurring the horses on - the reason I didn't was because I've never seen them do it.

I find it exceptionally difficult to believe that you, indeed, have been to a rodeo, based on the inaccuracies of what you have said. Which type of rodeo have you been to? And where was it, if you don't mind me asking once again?
smile.gif

Yes, it must go on the 'Things to do ' list ! I was thinking that anyone with an interest in horses would nip out to see it and then I remembered that Canada is enormously vast LOL

Tia,

Thanks for the advice, I'm really looking forwards to going and seeing it all in the flesh, on a TV screen is never quite the same.

We are about 1/2 an hour from London, also have Woodstock and Paris nearby, they have rodeos later on. Mississauga is about 3/4 an hour away too so easily reachable. We do plan to go to Calgary one day, but as you said, in reality, it is like flying back to the UK distance wise!

I've been to the Mississauga one, it was certainly entertaining, and if you want some company, Enfys, I'll head down to it with you! The photos look fab Tia, glad you had a good day (and cracking up thinking about hubby's face as the cowboys oggled you in a micro mini!!!!!)

You don't think I've been to a rodeo - how odd that you think I would lie about something insignificant to a stranger on a chat room?! We went when we were in Florida, I have idea where abouts it was, we stayed in Orlando and was driving distance from there. It was about 12 years ago I guess?

What have I said that is inaccurate? Don't they spur the horses? Photo 2 (I think) you can see he's wearing spurs? Fair enough if you say they don't spur them, as I fully admit I'm no authority on rodeos at all and once again I did mean it as a genuine question.

Certainly in my experience the rider does not spur the horse - the spurs are part of the outfit - same as in dressage comps in the UK. The flank strap is what causes the horse to buck (in addition to years of training and experience) The rider has to first and foremost stay on the horse for 8 seconds - it is counter intuitive to spur the horse to buck more, therefore giving yourself less of a chance to stay on (does that makes sense?)

I must add that rodeos do vary hugely - the one Tia went to, and the ones I have been to, are on the 'approved' circuit (can't remember the official name) but the animals are looked after to a high standard, the venues are safe etc etc. Sadly there are many venues that are not up to standard, the animals poorly cared for etc, I know a few people who have been put off rodeos by seeing substandard events.

Ive been to a rodeo a few times. TBH I wouldn't go back nowadays. I went in Florida and watched the usual things at a local one (barrel racing, bareback & bulls etc.). Loved the barrel racing, especially seeing little tiny kids doing it - crazy. But I didnt honestly like watching the horse & bull riding. The animals obviously dont like having the strap done up (hence the bucking) and I definately think the spurs they were are very very uneccesary, even if they are just part of the costume so to speak, it would be near impossible to NOT accidentally spur the horse / bull while its bucking like hell! And a good deal of damage can be done with spurs! They're damn sharp! I do think its a bit cruel TBH. But I do think they are well looked after behind the scenes and they were generally lovely natured horses.

Oh crikey; I really would consider that very seriously. Rodeos in Mexico are not governed and you are likely to see some awful things happening there.

She said New Mexico - she will see some great rodeos. I love the Rodeo, great fun, great people and great horses. Go to one in Colorado or Wyoming, those guys a working cattle from their horse everyday!

Enfys; the Mississauga Championships are on 28th, 29th & 30th September.

You coming too?

LOL!! Western spurs are not sharp....who told you that? They are rowled - they have little wheels which move around and around and they are blunt ended so they roll over the horse's skin; quite unlike english ones which are fixed and do dig into the skin; hence that is why you see some english ridden horses with spur gashes/scars but you don't see western horses with them.

LOL!! It's a bit too close to the Old Smoke for my liking LOL!!

Ach maybe I will come if you two organise it.

I had ignored this post foe few days thinking that it would be a bunny hugger storey, but am pleased to say i was wrong!
I have some things i would like to say, but its darn late and it will be v long...and might stir all sort up!!!>>>>
goodnight!

Looking forwards to reading what you have to say damitjanit.
Not particularly late here but Stampede coverage starts in a minute so I'm off downstairs to watch. Goodnight.

What channel is it on Enfys?

Yes damitjanit - let rip! You honestly didn't expect a bunny-hugger thread from me did you??
grin.gif
Or maybe you did - perhaps you've read on here that I don't hit my horses and that I raise and produce them in a natural environment.

I keep reading peoples posts mentioning how horses buck out of angony, misery, or annoyance.

Does anyone else not see their horses bucking out of play and joy on a daily basis!!!!!! well all of mine do!

They may not go on and on like the rodeo horses but I have to agree with Tia that this is also a learned behavior! They know it's what they have to do so they do it! I imagine many of them even DO enjoy it!

Horses are tough and I doubt they suffer much pain from the flank strap. I imagine it is just annoying to them and I assume they feel the same way about having a bit in their mouths!

I think it was also mentioned that Rodeo is the "ONLY" sport where bulls and horses are treated cruel for the enjoyment of the watcher. Ummmm.....this is not true for many reasons.
I cannot think of one person that I know that has been to rodeos that wants to see animal cruelty or an animal injured!

That is like comparing it to bull or cock fighting where the intent of the sport IS for the animal to be injured! SO NOT TRUE FOR RODEO!

Anyhow...I'll stop now, my opinion and points have already been covered very well by a couple of others on here.

I will say this though.......I detest watching calf and goat tyeing at rodeos . Now that DOES look awful and cruel to me !
