Press Statement #2

Frodo Baggins and Laine Ashker fell at fence 5. Ashker sustained injuries but was conscious, talking and able to move all extremities when she was transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital. She is currently under the care of the emergency and trauma services staff.

Frodo Baggins was immediately attended by a team of veterinarians. He was given intravenous fluids and supportive medications for shock and pain. After he was stabilized, he was sedated and transported by horse ambulance to nearby Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, where he was immediately attended by emergency personnel.

Further tests showed that Frodo Baggins had sustained a fracture at the base of his skull, as well as severe lung injury. As the prognosis was very poor, a representative of the family concurred that euthanasia was the most humane option for the horse. A complete necropsy examination will be performed. Everyone at the event is saddened by the loss of this brave horse.

Quote from a Lexington paper
Chelsa Roska, a 23-year-old spectator from Milwaukee, saw the accident, which occurred at a jump called The Flower Basket.

“I saw the horse coming in,” Roska said, “and it looked like he went up to jump and hit just about (at) his chest – his front legs barely cleared it – and he just flipped over, through the jump, and landed on top of the rider.

“They got the horse up and he was standing fine. The rider was already surrounded so I couldn’t see her -- but then the horse, about a minute later -- it looked like he got spooked by something and turned around and fell over.”

A lovely horse gone too soon. Lets hope Laine is OK.

Initial reports say Laine has lost some teeth, possible fractured jaw, and (lets hope not) fratured vertebrae.

Sarah Hansel and The Quite Man also had a horrific fall. The Quite Man was screened then taken away but reports so far say he has suffered a shoulder injury, not euthanised.

oh no sounds horrific

A particularly sad connection too is that Laine's other entry Mazetto the ride given to her by the mother of the late Eleanor Brennan - you all may remember the UK born rider but based in the USA who tragically lost her life last year competing at Florida Horse Park.

Reports are just coming out that The Quiet Man was euthanized this morning due to the injuries he sustained from his fall on cross country at Rolex.

Also, Laine (Frodo's rider) is in stable, but serious condition at the UK Medical Center. She sustained injuries to her face and chest and is currently on a respirator due to punctured lungs.

It's been confirmed, taken from Kentucky's website:

Media Center Sunday AM Update with Dr. Catherine W. Kohn, V.M.D.
Dr. Catherine W. Kohn, V.M.D, Veterinary Delegate, explained that due to the extent of injuries incurred in his fall, The Quiet Man was sadly humanely euthanized this morning. The Quiet Man's loss will be felt by all.

Laine's fall was from a horrific rotational fall, and her horse crushed her chest. She has multiple broken ribs that punctured both lungs.

Heidi White Carty went off her horse and then finished the course, perhaps with a broken arm or collarbone. Multiple horses either didn't make the jog this morning and at least two were spun.

It's a gloomy day in Kentucky at the Horse Park. Given how few horses were going to run, the attrition rate has been awful.
