Lol, currently I am taking about three cold showers throughout the night! OH isn't impressed as he has to be up for work at 5:30 each morning, and the shower whirring away at all hours isn't making him a happy person..
 
Feeling everyone's pain.

I've never been a lover of the hot-weather, it really upsets me physically, swollen legs/ankles etc and prickly heat :( Hate it!

Poor horses are too hot, even though they've got shade they're hanging around near the gate begging to be allowed to come in, but I can't let them anywhere coz the stables are all as hot as ovens as there's no shade anywhere here and everything faces south!

So best place is turned out so they can stand under the tree really.

Poor dogs too are too hot, particularly our aged dog, poor old love she doesn't know what to do with herself, her instinct is to go outside to cool off but too sunny out there so we're keeping her in as much as possible at the mo.

The only way to cope is to totally change routine. I couldn't sleep the other night: at 5.30 a.m. I was riding out of the yard, went for an hours hack. Total peace and quiet! No flies, no traffic, bliss!! Got back by just before 7 a.m. when the sun was just coming up, perfect! Its far easier to get jobs done before it gets hot, but does need lifestyle change around that.

Not that I don't enjoy the summer, far from it, its just this relentless heat. It was a horrible clammy spring, very heavy and humid, followed by this tropical heat :( Please Powers That Be, give us a rest FFS!
 
Yes, it's hard to sleep, the ground is too hard for fast work, and I look a sweaty mess after riding. But, I'm in no hurry for it to end as we waited for months for the mud to go, and I love not feeling cold! (Although sorry for those of you suffering - I'm sure we'll get a respite soon...)
 
I have mixed feelings. It's wonderful to be having a proper summer for a change. As I've hit late 40's I don't enjoy the heat like I used to, certainly can't sit out in it anymore. I get mega hot when riding in winter never mind this.

Horse wise I'm extremely lucky to have fab facilities with outdoor, indoor and covered arenas. Even so it's too hot for me to ride

I have RA and early mornings and late evenings and nights are the most painful times so can't change when I ride

However I am extremely lucky my mare can be left a few weeks and isn't any different to ride. I am having to restrict grazing and soak hay to keep her weight down

While our fields have no shade we are very lucky that our stables are old wooden ones with huge doors either side so it's pleasant in there even in extreme heat
So ours all come in from 7/8 to 6/7.

Make the most of it who knows when we will see a real summer again!!
 
Pony and I are due to do a 65km endurance ride on Sunday. So our training has continued as normal. Ok, so I've dropped the speed but we're still doing the distances. I'm still running 4 times a week (just finished a fabulous 7km offroad trail run on Aylesbeare common - lovely!!). Every conceivable water container has been commandeered for Sunday. Ice blocks primed. Water bottles in the freezer. Can't wait!!!

Just a few days' releif!
 
I cannot moan about a good summer after the winter we had and as RTE pointed out-the summer we had two years ago and the 2 summers preceding that. I am loving the early mornings (4.50 am is truly stunning), loving that the hay crop will be awesome and loving not having to wear wells and waterproofs every day.

This heat is driving me bonkers. The horses are suffering and it's got to the point I don't know what to do with the poor things. They are hot and plagued by flies when out (fly kitted up) and don't have an awful lot of shade (although choose not to stand in it anyway). We have been bringing them in during the day but the stables are so hot....too hot! So out they are staying, with perhaps an hour or so in to escape the flies and to have a cold sponge down.

The ponies are going bonkers in their paddock due to the flies :(

Hacking is NOT enjoyable...left it until late tonight and was still too hot. Schooling out of the question in this heat for me.

The smallest of yard chore sees me covered in a layer of sweat and this makes me grumpy!

I have to admit, I actually prefer the mud and rain of winter and all that comes with it!

Anyone else feeling the same or am I just a grumpy grump?!

Dear you are having a moan!!!
Think of the mud knee deep, rain, wind, dark days, darker nights, no way to dry your rugs, no way to dry your horses feet, can't ride because the bridlepaths are horrible, the roads to slippery, the school and fields to wet............
stop moaning enjoy summer!
 
I love each season as it comes. Go with the flow, if its hot ride early or later in the evening or don't ride at all. I love the summer, look after boys according there are just so many more hours to choose what you want to do. Winter, prefer it to be cold and crispy than wet and soggy. But even then, when standing by frozen tap or wadeing through sludge I still think "how lucky am I to have horses". Cheesey but true.

I also work, and am enjoying the weather, in spite of being in it. This weather makes my OH able to harvest crops and make hay- both of which benefit your horses in the depth of winter. Weighing it up id rather have a hot summer than a wet one, and give in recent years it's one or the other I won't complain about hot weather when it comes.
 
I said before that this summer is a bonus to farmers & producers, just not us ladies of a certain age. I sweat from the kick off every morning, even at 3am when my hubby gets up!
 
mine are spending 90% of their time in their field shelter, which was full of hay, manky old dirty broken bales of hay, last year, that took me 1 month to clear by hand, then my dad fenced the area off and took down a fence from the field so they could get in and out! then I had to get a crossing made as they had to cross a ditch! but despite all that hard work, in as much heat, im so glad I done it! they spent all winter in there and now all summer! well worth the effort!

riding is a challenge but more because me and my 4yr old are in a dominance battle at the moment, he think's hes the boss to tonight I was sweating just getting him to walk 1/2 a mile up the lane! but I did win!
 
Noooooooooooooooo because Autumn then means Winter, then we will all be moaning about the rain cold snow and dark days and nights. I hate the winter and love this weather it makes you feel like getting up and doing stuff. So don't any of you moan later when the COLD hits and the SNOW starts to lay, I shall remind you all what you have said lol ....
 
i don't mind the cold and wet as you an dress up against it, but there is only so many clothes you can take off in the heat before getting arrested !! problem in this country is we are not really set up for any of the weather we get!! too much rain we flood, too hot we melt , half inch of snow and we're all stranded lol
 
I know I'm in the minority, but I love having horses during the winter and can face the windy, rainy, coldy and muddy challenges better then the hot, muggy, fly infested, sweat covered challenges of horse husbandry in the summer.

I don't dislike having horses in the summer, I just find it so much harder.

I for one am looking forward to big fluffy beds, stable wraps to dry hosed legs off, brushing crusty mud off and finishing the whole thing with a big hot chocolate in the tack room!

I appreciate the hay yield this summer is fantastic and will make sure I remember this big grumbly moan when I am feeding it to my horses next year.

I'm off to wallow in a cold bath ;-)
