Rolled Toes

Hi

How many of you have rolled toes? Why? and has it made a difference?

I have quiet a lazy horse who is prone to tripping out hacking, I have the farrier coming next week and im going to discusse maybe rolling his toes. Any advice etc would be greatly received.

My mare has had these as have my others in past

it does help if your horse daisy cuts and wears the front s of shoes down to quick or trips or stumbles is partially sighted or such or prone to overreaching

there are many reasons for it if any of the above apply i would recommend it can make shoes last longer

Hi my horse stumbled and my farrier recommended natural balance shoes which have worked brillantly. The toes are actually trimmed straight and the shoe is set slightly further back. It takes a couple of days for the horse to get used to it but we've never looked back. Speak to your farrier and see what he/she thinkgs.

Mine had them for years for navicular reasons. She was much more comfortable with them and literally had them for 10 plus years.

I took the shoes off my young cob who was prone to tripping. That, together with a training programme to get him off his forehand, definitely made things a whole lot better.

He is now fully grown, and I would happily put the shoes back on if I had a reason too - but for now barefoot seems best. It just seemed another thing to get in the way of a horse who was finding his feet slightly unmanageable anyway!!

Currently reading Feet First, and am quite impressed by most of their ideas, especially as they had a lifetimes (x2) of conventional shoeing.

I was of the understanding that it helped the breakover. Have found it helps stop stumbling.

Thanks everyone so far for the replies, he's very lazy out hacking and doesn't alway pick his feet up, he doesnt help himself out of a pickle either. It's never been a problem in the arena schooling

I have rolled toes on one of my TB's, the farrier decided to try it after he kept pulling shoes off (3 shoes in one night alone) and it has worked. I dont want to speak too soon, but no lost shoes since

I would get him working over poles at the trot and in the walk to make him more balanced and aware of his feet
