Morning.
I just logged on to have a look and wondered the same thing. I missed most of the weekend drama but saw Saminca yesterday evening and thought she looked stressed.
Could they have just been put out to see if that helped?
I assume Matilda is out too.
Have got plenty of uni work to do today so I can keep an eye on them all. I haven't been able to watch for ages.
Gutted I missed the weekend's action, fancy them both foaling in the same evening! Got Phantom and her foal in the corner of my screen today, sooo cute!
Weather here: looks like it's about to tip it down!
Can I ask a serious question please from those who know more...
This is in NO WAY a critiscism(sp) of anyone so please don't shout at me. I am very interested that is all.
Looking at Phantom she looks quite ribby and thin and is this a normal shape change after foaling?
I am asking because I don't know about mares/foals at all and I know these mares are cared for fed etc etc to a high standard so wondered if this was just Phantom reacting to foaling or do all mares look a bit poor after foaling. Or is this a bad camera angle? Or am I going mad?
Thank you for not shouting at me in advance

I think they all look a bit poor after foaling - apart from the foal (huuuuuge in Samincas case!) they carry quite a lot of fluid which obviously disappears following the birth and then their bodies will start to breakdown any fat reserves it may have to start producing milk - and they are greedy little so and so's!! Post foal is when they really have to start eating for two!! So perfect timing for spring grass - and foals don't actually graze until they about 3 months (I think) as it takes that long for their gut to have the right bacterial balance needed to digest grass properly - until then its all mummy!! The average foal suckles soemthing mad like 200 times a day so thats a lot of milk on tap!!
Thank you for that - I didn't realise how much they suckled but thinking about it they do weight a lot so I guess they obviously need to suckle a lot. The timing re: spring grass etc is interesting but obvious too (when someone points it out
).
One of the good things about this forum is that you can learn a lot on here. Some of it is stuff I just don't see as we don't have mares with foals at our yard. Good old HHO

Both Phantom and Saminca look poorer than I would like which is why they are being kept in and have been for the past week leading up to their foaling... usually we give mares 2 feeds a day and they're turned out during the day but we kept these 2 in so they can have lunchtime feeds as well and they are on haylage rather than hay to help put condition back on them.
Soem mares due drop off after foaling, others look better than before they conceived - depends on the indivudual mares!
Oh and it's not wormer I'm giving the foals, I give them a 5 day course of antibiotics as a precaution so that's why you'll see me wrestling them, or stef if I'm not here!
You are doing a fantastic job and providing us with hours of entertainment.
I do have one complaint tho..........I have a headache from too much staring at the screen.....so next year, can you arrange a better gap in between foals or a big cork.. two in one night is just not good for my health... thanks..x
- just having a quick peek before I go and feed the nags!! Have got foalcam up ok - Samincas foal is guzzling away now and she is chilled!
Was an update from Rollestone - Phantom and Saminca are both on extra rations as they are being good mummys and putting it all back into their folaies!!
Matilda is looking huuuuuuge!!!!
Right of to feed the nags - will be back in a bit!!
Hi Rollestone thank you for your reply.
Please don't think I was criticising at all I genuinely have no experience of mares and foals and was interested. I know your animals get top quality care. I am always interested in stuff but it can be hard to ask without causing offense sometimes.
Really enjoying the foal cams so thank you.
PS I love Checkmate - keep looking at his pics and talking to OH - he isn't keen on a 3rd ned but I'm working on him
Hi everyone, not really posted much but ive been watching the foal cam and now i cant get it to work im getting HTTP 404 not found is anyone else getting this or am i the only one?
