Having nursed my girly back to full health last year laminitis is the one thing I do know about and apart from the fact it is incredibly painful for them - especially in bigger horses it can as f_s and other have said kill them. I could cheerfully slap her and call the vet for her horse myself. She had better not post a 'OMG my horse is really poorly' thread.....grrrrr!

Samstar - as I was replying I was beginning to think that it was a bit of joke!

I hope it is, because the thought of that makes me go cold, and plays on my mind!!

I've just read that post... and haven't bothered to reply as everything I was going to say has already been said!
wink.gif

She just doesn't seem to realise how serious Laminitis can be...
mad.gif
and if her horse is continuously laying down and shifting his weight from one foot to the other it could be Chronic Laminitis! Poor horse!

I know Slinky, I have first hand experience of laminitis too! As I said in the post, my friend lost two within a month, it was/is the most devastating thing to happen, and a hell of a job to control.

I'm really glad you have turned yours around, well done to you. I managed it too, but the vet said I caught it so quickly (due to experience) that even he would have been in two minds about it!

i have two laminitics and they are managed within an inch of their lives, I know to pull them off the grass as soon as the grass starts to grow after winter. We nearly lost my daughter's old pony when he started years ago and I could not believe how distraught I was, sorry but I would have had the vet out yesterday, if you can't afford it you shouldn't have horses.

Makes my blood run cold!!

Why ask for advice and then argue back and/or ignore it?
confused.gif
Acute laminitis is the most dangerous for the horse - as I said to her it is an emergency on a par with colic! Just hope vet is on the way and its ok for poor horsey.

SJ_Superstars - was it you looking for a new yard by Melton? did I PM you about Burton Lazars?

I agree!
grin.gif

I don't always write long replies to posts, and sometimes leave gaps, which, I think makes it seem that I'm just giving scant advice!, but this is one area that I do know about, and I even changed a vet practice because I rang them about a laminitic and they wouldn't come straight out!!!
frown.gif

In their defence, they knew me, and knew that I had dealt with it before, but, I'm not a vet, and any pony or horse with laminitis, or suspected laminitis needs a vet urgently.

So sorry for the rant on a Rollestone thread

Huge glasses of wine to you all...phew, glad to get that little niggle off my chest!!!

f_s - glad I'm not alone!!

I had a stand up row in my vets (BIG well known equine vets!) over the treatment and on going management of my mare and her laminitis - told me to bute her and ride her when she could hardly walk!
shocked.gif
- also didn't like the fact that I went to the Laminitis Clinic so changed vets and now have one who specialises in laminitis!

SJ_S - have you had any luck finding somewhere?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I have always got my eyes and ears open and how found a few nice places but the situation has improved at my yard at the moment so I'm happier again but I always like to have a few places in mind in case I get so fed up I decide to move!

Don't start me off honeypots - it was one of many suggestions/pieces of advice that fly totally in the face of any current treatment/research of laminitis. Mainly got the hump with me because I did my research and spoke to the Laminits Clinic - who are in fact the experts - and dared to argue with them!! Still I was right in the end and now my lovely girl is the hooligan she was before and I got my bill from them reduced before I paid it and changed vets!!
