Does anyone know why dogs want to roll in excrement of all types. My collies do this constantly and it drives me crazy. Every time we come back from a walk I end up bathing them because they stink!!!!!!!

Fox s**t is usually the poo of choice........

Oh yes, Fox poo is the chosen one for our dogs and it bl**dy reeks, its a nightmare to get off. They do it to disguise their smell so they don't get so easily noticed when hunting - goes back to dogs in pack days.

It's because they have bad taste in perfume!

lol

Seriously though, isn't it something to do with when they were wild and covering up their own scent to protect themselves or something along those lines. Basically instictive behaviour, like scratting grass over where they've been to the tiolet covering where they've been.

I could be wrong but that's what I thought

Both the collie and the cocker spaniel do this and will even have a go in bird poo if its a particularly good looking splat!

I can't for the life of me remember his name but here are the pictures of him Wolf man . When we went to this park in Devon last summer he was doing a demonstration, he has been on the telly before, he is basically the leader of a wolf pack, it was really interesting and made sense of alot of things that domestic dogs do, rolling in poo one of them! I can't remeber exactly how he put it but will try and find out. Basically rolling in the poo is all about dominance(sp) in the wild the dogs have smells from the meat they eat and territory, not many dog owners feed thier dogs natural meat. Rolling in poo gives the dogs a smell that makes other dominering (sp) dogs accept them. I really can't explain this very well!

lol my highly active little yorkie will always roll in fox poo (stinks!) if she gets the chance! She doesn't roll in anything else though she rolls at home on the carpet if she has eaten something nice!
