Rolling paddocks

I had my 'small' paddock rolled today. (I use it for winter turnout for a couple of hours a day throughout the winter - trashed is not the word!). I wanted it done a week ago but the farmer that I used said it was too wet still. It looks lovely from a distance but it is still rutted all over where it was obviously too dry. What a bl**dy nuisance! I will have to have it done again I suppose after a bit of rain as I use it to jump in throughout the summer (as well as grazing). How is everyone elses paddocks bearing up?

if you roll again then you risk compacting the soil and thus inhibiting the regrowth of the grass

depending on how 'small' is small you could fill any holes with a mix of soil and grass seed to help improve the pasture and get rid of theodd rut - manual labour to say the least but worth it if the area is small

ive just been in the fields rolling them since 1 this afternoon. basically what we are going to do is.. roll it then harrow it then roll it again. the fields we have just rolled are fine and the grass is coming through. where it is rutty you will have to get in harrowed to break it up then roll it again.

You may well need to harrow it first, then roll it.

We have one field that was totally trashed, and in the area where the hay feeder was is particularly bad - evern after harrowing and rolling. It will need some work done on it in the next couple of weeks and will be out of action until the autumn.
