Rollo in horspital with pneumonia

My 9 yr old gelding is in Rossdales with pneumonia. He ate some breakfast today which he hasnt done for a week so things are looking up. He didnt have much fluid on the lungs but has had a raised pulse rate and slight temp and a cough - as well as lethergy and no appetite. I get the feeling it could have been a lot worse.Can I hear some stories about recovery after pneumonia please - good and bad. Obvioulsy I will get lots of advice from vets - they are excellent there, but your experiences are also going to help.thanks
 
Sorry don't have any experience of pneumonia but hope he gets better soon.This winter has been so long, mild and damp which can't have helped. If he's stabled for much of the time I'd be checking round to see if you think things like the ventilation could be improved for when he comes home. Good luck.

Thanks. I think one of the triggers was that we were in a yard where there was no ventilation apart form over the door - the owner had put glass over the windows so the only air was over the door. And he was in more because of the wet. These two things were part of why we moved - and that was the next trigger. Stress of moving.New yard has loads of air. I already feed from the ground and he is on woodpellets dust free bedding, eats haylage and has dampened feed. And he can be out 24/7 if I want

my girl choked two summers ago and inhaled a lot of gunk/food etc and developed aspiration pneumonia - she spent a week in the Dick vets on various antibiotics/fluid etc. When she first went up they ultrasounded her lungs and she had a couple of centimetres of consolidation in all the lung lobes.
She came home after a week and probably took another month or so to be fully back to herself. The only long term issue we have is she's now quite sensitive to dust so I have to be careful about bedding/hay etc but otherwise she's fully recovered and back to normal.
 
My horse developed pneumonia a fcouple of months after I bought her. Very scary at the time but she made a full recovery. My vet said she must have a week off for every day she was poorly so having only just got her, we did nothing for 2 months!
 
Not looking good today. vets called and he hasnt improved in fact he is just as sad and flat and there is now more fluid on the lungs. Plus, they scoped the oesphagus and found it is being squashed by something. The word tumour was mentioned but it could also be fluid that has been consolidated. They are testing the lung fluid this afternoon and I should know more by tea time. Vet said more than once it isnt looking very good for him.
He has come back into work slowly over the past year because of his arthritis and I have taken it so slowly and carefully and he is looking so good (was!) to have this now on top is just too much. Going to be a very long afternoon.
 
I cant quite believe this but Rossdales just called to say Rollo was turned out this afternoon, he rolled and collapsed. They put him to sleep there in the paddock.They are going to do a PM this afternoon. Such a fantastic horse am going to miss him so much.
 
The vets could drain the fluid from the lungs, could suggest it, sometimes they forget these things it will also help the antibiotics if less gunk for them to fight. Hope all goes well. Couldnt be in a better place though.

I am so sorry to hear this but it sounds like there must have been something else going on, I hope you get some answers this afternoon, RIP Rollo x
 
Sorry to hear your news. I didnt want to say in my thread, but a tb on the yard a few months ago with pneumonia was also pts at the vets. Hugs.

I did read they call it travel sickness, something to do with travelling also causes fluid in the lungs alongside pneumonia, but ofcourse if they have to be traveled to the vets it cant be avoided.

The "shipping sickness" is sometimes a cause of pneumonia but he had it before the hours trip to Rossdales and it applies to 6 8 hours in an airless box or container - travelling him to the vets wasnt going to make a difference. It looks as if the pnemonia was secondary to possibly a tumour, although being in an airless stable at a previous yard might have not helped the lungs if they were comptrimised the tumour was presumably always going to get him in the end.

Im so sorry to hear such sad news. I believe our boys where field buddies at a rehab yard last year. Sadly I lost my boy to grass sickness so I really feel your heartache
 
Donald, yes I remember that a horse was lost there and how terrible we all felt. I felt so sorry for you. It was such a shame Rollo didnt have time to benefit from all of Donna's work. Now I know why he had no stamina these last few months - when he should have been getting stronger again.thank-you everyone for your kind words
