Hi,

I have 2 welsh D's (and had many other "round horses") and no matter what , any saddle even when they are made for the horse i always feel like they are "rolly" on the horse and it dosnt give me 100% security?

Ive tried loads of makes/sizes/types and still feel the same.......

do you ever get a total secure feel with a round horse?

My saddles do fit fine, and dont slip back/forward or wont spin round but they just dont feel like a saddle feels on a finer horse

I use (and always have) a prolite non slip pad. Star's back is as flat as a table and before we got a Flair saddle, it slipped. Bad.
Prolite non slip pads..... Fab.

ok thanks, i have a prolite nummnah but not the pad,

I had a sue carson flair saddle, but that slipped too, damn round horses, i dont think the big shoulder movement helps either lol

Stubben string girth & a good sheepskin numnah (ideally one made from one piece of sheepskin rather than lots of smaller pieces stuck together).

My very round cob used to have this problem, I spoke to the saddler about it and she suggested using a Thorowgood cob girth, it has no elastic and it solved the problem straight away.

Our saddler fitted some extra straps (which may be the point straps previously referred to!) which stopped the problem :) If you do use an elasticated girth, make sure it has elastic on both ends.

you are best only using girths with elastic on either both ends (as sooty said), or neither end, or in the middle. cos one sided elastic girths pull the saddle to one side. also over-elasticated girths can encourage over-girthing which is quite a common problem.

:)

I have an extremely flat backed pony. I used to have a made to measure saddle which always felt "rolly". Then got a wintec saddle with the changeable gullets to try and fit his shape, or so the saddler said.... that moved worse than the original saddle. I would start out the ride with a straight saddle come back and it would have twisted so the panel was on his spine. I quickly stopped using that and in despair tried a treeless saddle. I had heard lots of people saying they felt less secure but I have had no problems. My horse seems happy with it, there are no ruffles in his fur when you take the saddle off showing it hasn't slipped and he works well in it.

The less extreme advice is to try and get a saddle with 4 girth straps and do them up on the furthers apart ones. It's supposed to secure the saddle better.
