This is terrible, as said before no horse should be allowed into the uk, without a current -ve coggins test can we start a Facebook group or something to try and get some publicity.

You'd also think they might have learnt something from Bluetongue, but it appears not. They have now brought in policies for susceptible animals to be tested for bluetongue when they have arrived in this country. Woopy doo.....
10 horses one shipment, why didnt they test all 10 at the same time regardless of origin when they have all been in direct contact, cuts could have happened in transit etc? why only now be testing the belgian horse?
I also wonder what the 'further 2 horses under investigation' are. Again my suspicious mind thinks therefore they are uk horses as no mention of origin that were poss showing symptoms? gah I dont know, they just like to spin it so that it sounds like what they have in place is working and thats why we have picked it up and its all fine because of that
I think many people on the forum are being 'quiet' because, like me, for the main they do not fully understand what the TPA is and are probably reading the news in shock as surely common sense would or should say that ALL imported livestock to our country should be tested for these sorts of diseases.
DEFRA clearly are not doing their jobs properly at all!
(also many forum members may well be at work now - like I am and should be working - so may not even read any of this til this evening!)

I wonder what one of these is!

I thought that too! I assume one with double doors so you create and exclusion zone and have a 'sterile' lobby so to speak. complete guess though would have to google!
Having lived in the States I fully understand the implications of EIA. But like many others I am quietly trying to come to terms with the potential inplications if this outbreak is not isolated. Financial loss is the least of my worries. The concept of having to have a "healthy" carrier horse destroyed is far more distressing.
Changes to the import laws are a no brainer in my opinion, but do need to allow for expats and migrant workers to bring their (coggins tested) low value horses into the UK.
There have been some very worthy comments from a large group of forum members but a vast majority of the forum have remained silent, or perhaps not even read the posts.
Maybe I am be totally pessimitic but do people not realise that, if this disease spreads and their horse is infected, it will be PTS and they will get no compensation and probably no insurance payout either??

What do you want people to say? Its a sh!t situation that could and should have been prevented by DEFRA, just like Blue Tongue and F&M. Why state the obvious over and over again?
When I posted my comment earlier this afternoon it was a valid statement. There have since been a significant number of posts on the issue and my comments are no longer valid.
However, I feel it still remains that the vast majority of the equine community do not know what threat the national herd is under. It doesn't even make the home page of the DEFRA website and there is little discussion about it on other horse forums.

I'm one of those who has been quiet so far.

Quiet contemplation will not save the horse that becomes a carrier of EIA. Its a death sentance for any equine unfortunate enough to pick it up. Whether it suffers the disease, or becomes a carrier, the end result is going to be the same. You will lose your beloved animal, and get £1 compensation for your devastating loss.
Whats needed now is for EVERYONE to pull together and start putting together a plan of action (see sirena's post) and then implementing it.
We all need to wake up to the fact that bickering, whinging and moaning is not going to stop this.
We CAN make a difference.......its just a case of stepping up to the plate.
The dealer who imports these animals is well known around the Sales circuit.
They are usually described as "Hungarian Drafts" or "Belgian Drafts".
At one particular Sale, it wasn't unusual for him to leave 2 or 3 of them on the lorry for the duration of the Sale. This was stopped after complaints of them stood in a hot/cold box for up to 10 hours at a time.
He was then, and still does at this Sale, given a pen at the front of the lairage to off-load them.
In August there were 4...which the story was they were going to Potters the next day..all 4 were "Drafts"!
He has been bringing over these "Drafts" for at leats 2 yrs now...it was only a matter of time.
I hope they throw the book at him, as it really couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.
If DEFRA was any sort of competant dept. they would have closed this loophole years ago.
There is also another charming dealer in Sth Devon who also likes to off-load these "Draft" types...equally as unscrupulous as the dealer at the centre of this outbreak. I wonder what they have in ATM?
Apathy seems to be endemic through the horsey fraternity, how many on here give a toss about Bridleways and rights of way being shut to riders, BMW shut a Bridleway, yet how many of the 4.5 million of us still buy a BMW, any solidarity there, noooooo, thought not.
The river path where I am has been closed since November and the diversion doesn't cater for us in any shape or form, on a yard full of horse owners guess how many complained to the rights of way officer, oh yea, one, me, Cricket club applies
to have one of our grazing fields, how many write to the council to object, oh yea, one, me, we lose a field, local park gets £thousands for BMX track tennis courts and new everything kids play areas ect ect ect, who asks councillor about using the trees cut down for jumps around edge of the park, oh yea, one, me, no jumps.
Well bareing in mind how much we get catered for with crossings roads ect, dont hold your breath for any action.
Lets face it, a mass cull of horses would suit certain parties, it would solve the Hunting issue for the goverment very quickly, also no horses and poo on the road, and best of all when all those DIY yards go bust and have to sell the land it can all be turned into massive housing estates and commercial parks that we all sooooooooooooo desperately need to buy another bloody TV, or car we can pay mountains of tax to own and run, it's a win win for the powers that be, so dont talk to me about apathy in the horse fraternity, lets face it Wiltshire is miles away, isn't it
I know the horses in question here are romanian, but what about all the franch ones that have come here. Will they all have had a coggins test done before they come over? What laws are in place to make sure this is done to protect our horses?
We just leave ourselves wide open to things like this.
Unfortunately there is no requirement under EU regulations to have a Coggin's test. If the horses were travelling from Belgium, they should have had a health Cert (TRACES) from a Belgian vet. The tripartite agreement relates to horses travelling from France - not through France. If they did not have a health cert from Belgium, then the person who brought them was in breach of EU law.
If he did have a health cert from Belgium - then he was not in breach of the law. The EU health checks do not include a blood test.
