Ok guys any advice would be good!

Romeo is being an arse (and is too dam big to mess about). He keeps throwing tantrums when Jen rides him and there is definately nothing wrong with her riding at all, it is him. He bucked her off once and hasnt done it since but he keeps throwing his head around and threatens to throw himself inside out again. Jen does really well, growls at him and pushes him forward but this is certainly not the Romeo I know.
I have thought of putting him on a calmer but as soon as she gets off he is a right lazy dopey half asleep sweetheart.
I think its a combination of 5 weeks off, spring grass, schooling him in a field (rather than a school).....

Just to clarify it is not Jen fault, she is prob a better rider than me!

I think you have identified the more obvious causes yourself - add to that the possibility he has tweaked something in the field or has put on enough weight for the saddle to pinch maybe, and a different style of riding that is throwing some challenges at him........

maybe he needs to go somewhere to be kept ticking over while you recuperate

If you are certain there is no underlying cause I guess you just have to try and push him through the strops.
I've found in the past that when I really genuinely loose my rag (I don't mean that I batter the horse wouldn't do that) but just in my state of mind like that is IT I am soo angry I don't care about anything else but you are going to do as you are bloody well told, I don't change what I'm doing in my riding or get rough just really determined and usually accompanied with a tirade of foul language then they tend to just give up like they know they've pushed you too far.
Maybe this is my crazy teacher personality coming out because it works on the kids too
Sorry not a very good explanation.

hmm you might be right but the saddler said he needs to put a teeny bit of weight on as the saddle is the slightest bit wide. His back is fine and been checked, saddler is coming out to fit a new saddle when im back in the saddle.
I did say to Jen that she is prob a more forward going rider than me and I do a lot more hacking than schooling on him so he isnt used to being schooled. Also his field is not the best place to school a youngish 17.2 stroppy ginger horse.......

I understand completely!!!!

Jen does do that, growling pushing him on (which is great) and not giving up. I just worry about her cos I dont want her to hurt herself if he chucks her again, it is a long way down!!!

Ooh just seen this!

Once Romeo gets off my leg he goes quite nicely

just after 20 minutes or so he throws a hissy fit!

He throws his head around and grunts, and tries to go up or buck. People have said that I should work him through it, which I have and once he gets going he stops being naughty for a bit but I have to catch him at the right time otherwise he plays up again. he very 'backwards' and I hope he just doesn't like me riding him forwards

I take these things personal, which is silly because I know I can't have every horse like me

Any other ideas? I think loads of horses are getting a bit crazy with the grass at the moment

I could ride one with her in the week if you like. Mine only school in the field and tbh they are a lot easier hacking!
