Hi there,

Which do you all rate more for controlling a strong horse? I am considering getting a rope halter but just only just bought a nice leather headcollar so thought i might just attach a chain to that for more control. Any ideas?

Depends what its doing really. Rope halters used correctly are milder but sometimes a correctly used chain is needed either for safety or a more instant way of correcting. Really I don't use them to control a strong horse, just as an aid (if needed) to teach them the manners to control themselves, so just a short term solution for me if I do use one. I'd rather not use either, but sometimes a few well timed touches on a chain are kinder than continual pressure on a headcollar or a snaffle bridle.

I'd use a chain for a short, sharp shock, never really used a rope halter so can't advise, except that you can't (or shouldn't anyway) tie up with a rope halter. A stallion shank used OVER the nose, not under the chin, sorts most bolshy horses out if used judiciously and not abused.

Absolutely agree Cortez. :)

Under the chin for heads up, over the nose for everything else.

All mine are used to the chain, mostly just the fact that it is there is enough to remind them of their manners. I did go down the rope halter/control halter route and to be honest my horses just smiled and ignored it - try holding 1000lbs of wilful haffy x when he doesn't want to pick his head up with a bit of rope, I only had to put a chain on him (under his chin because he did the nose on the ground tactics) and he was all "Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, What can I do for you today Ma'am?"

This made me smile . . . and nod in recognition. Think I might need to do this - since being on box rest, he has forgotten all manners and loves to do the "head down and tow" routine - rope headcollar does pretty much nothing. Sigh.

With a chain on, butter wouldn't melt in her greedy little mouth.

We use a chain over the nose for our 12'3 welsh a......it's embarrassing to say he can bugger off with no problem leaving me standing there looking like an idiot:o

He has spent the last 14 years before we got him just walking to and from his paddock without a headcollor on, the lady just opened his door and off he went but he is getting better
