Hi

I am looking into doing some ROR showing with my ex racehorse, I just want to see what bit I can use? I have used a loose ring snaffle with a coloured browband and flat noseband, however would like to use a double bridle but think he would object. I thought there was a bit that is similar to a double but only one bit if that makes sense? Could I use a Swales Pelham show bit or should I just stick to my loose ring snaffle?

Any tips on the little show you have to give to please? :-)

Don't use a Swales! They are seriously harsh! They were originally a driving bit. If your horse won't accept a double (no harm in trying as some much prefer it though one of mine despised it!) Then go for a Show Pelham, also known as a Loose Ring Pelham. You have all the looks and the leatherwork of a double but with a single mouth piece.

There is no harm in keeping going out in your snaffle until your horse is both used to showing and until they are properly schooled to the Pelham. Do remember that you will get ride judges and they all ride differently so make sure you ride both of your reins in every way imaginable! Just on the snaffle, just the curb, both in equal measure, one more than the other, curb rein on top, snaffle rein on top, reins crossed, uncrossed etc. You may as well give yourself every chance at home before hitting the ring.

If it if not an ROR Qualifying class then you probably wont get a judge ride in which case your individual should show a trot, canter with change of rein and an extension.
