So went to my first ROR class at the weekend. Didn't place as was told my horse was too calm??? He behaved perfectly and didn't put a foot wrong whilst a couple of others were throwing their heads all over the place and couldn't canter properly as they were so strong (then ended up 2nd and 4th ) Where am I going wrong? He's not your typical TB and is super calm and soft mouthed but does lack a little impulsion as he's so chill but don't really know where to go from here

You obviously came across a judge that was expecting a class of lunatics! This is where the ROR need to get a grip. T|hey only use judges from their own panel - many of which are not showing people and don't have a clue about showing.

Put this class behind you. Not all judges are like that and another day you will see horses dropped for misbehaving.

Definitely seemed that way! So annoying that so many judges place misbehaving horses above well behaved ones but i guess that's showing for you- guess i'll act like a lunatic next time and see if i get placed ;)

Haha, yes well...maybe work on the impulsion but not much else you can take from that really
My very non horsey OH came with me to take my diddy horse showing, and as I came out of the ring he said (probably too loudly) "well they definitely don't judge it on behaviour do they" - the second placed horse had actually run over its handler and didn't manage one stride of trot

Unfortunately you will get some "interesting" judging results in these classes but you've just got to think, "which one would I want to be sitting on" and I can bet my bottom dollar that it's your own lovely horse!

I once did one of the challenge classes at a big show. My horse is an old pro (showing bores him greatly) and he jumped a great clear (one of only three), did a fine show and was literally the only horse that stood in the line up, I even told one person to park their horse almost on top of mine to help get it to settle.

They started dishing out the frillies and I was slightly surprised to be completely at the bottom of the line. The judge came down the line speaking to everyone (which I really like) but came to me and said, I'm sorry I couldn't place him, he just wouldn't stand still for me to look at...............................sigh................... I chuckled to myself and followed the other horses out of the ring.

My theory with showing is that as long as you get at least one nice picture then it's been a good day!

Up here you barely get that as the company that has the monopoly on event pictures generally don't take very good pics! In 6 years I have bought 2 pics from them from over 50 shows.

Even worse! There's a couple of photographers down this way that have somehow got the gig for taking photos at events and it appears, very obviously by the composition of their pictures, that they don't know much about horses. I'm lucky that I've got a few friends that are pretty nifty with the camera.
