ROSEDENE - anyone know anything about this?

It is a pity that GSD Rescue couldnt present an unemotive report on the whole thing, their emotive use of language has put me firmly on the side of the RSPCA/police

Sad story for the dogs involved whatever the truth is.

IMO there is more to it than meets the eye, I'm reserving judgement on who is right or wrong without knowing the full facts....being the queen of fence sitting of course

Hmm kind of agree with you re the language, dogs being "murdered" is a bit OTT. Having had a look at the kennels on the link I would not be happy if those dogs are kept long term in those cages, if this is a council rehoming centre it is very poor.
Without knowing more facts it is hard to really comment about the dogs pts, would imagine they had health or temperament problems if the rest were deemed okay. Perhaps GSD rescue do need to step back a bit from their campaign against the RSPCA (which in the most part I agree with, they are useless), and just concentrate on the hundreds of GSDs needing homes.

I have viewed the K9search website (the Rosedene dogs) for a while and whilst it is obvious that the pound conditions were not ideal it was also clear that they did their very best to locate owners of lost dogs (e.g. recent pair of Airedales) and all that they could to rehome other dogs either with breed or general rescues.

One of my local rescues (Terrier Rescue/Staffie Rescue/Rescue Remedies - all bits of the same group) recently took three dogs from this pound, guaranteed a place for another which they are still trying to locate to take on if at all possible. Once things blew up they also offered places to another three or four. It now looks likely that they won't get any of these dogs, even though they specialise in rehoming the type of difficult to rehome dogs that Rosedene mainly ended up with (staffies etc).

I believe that other groups had also already come forward for some of these dogs. A regular volunteer dog walker had walked both of the Rotties that were killed and said they were great dogs. Having that number of strange people turn up abruptly is likely to unsettle any dog. Why didn't the RSPCA do a proper assessment period?

Given the RSPCAs track record on euthanasia I hope they are able to account fully for every last one of these dogs further down the line.

I have been to Rosedene, think my first visit was about 8yrs ago. The buildings were ageing but over the years have been considerably improved. Ok still not brand new but as good if not better than a lot of licensed boarding kennels.

I have adopted 2 dogs from Rosedene. My lovely long haired GSD came to Rosedene as a stray and looking very sad with life and thin. We sadly lost Scooby last year after around 8 wonderful years as an extremley loyal pet.

Our other dog was an elderly corgi x type called Jasper, who had testicular cancer. He had been with Rosedene for some time and was thoroughly loved. We took him home and gave him a happy home in front of a fire. He had a lovely 12mnths in a loving home. The staff at Rosedene even kept in touch to see how he was going and were all upset when we informed them after 12mnths he had been PTS after a stroke and loosing the use of his back legs. Now I am pretty sure he would not have got that chance in his twilight years if he had been with the RSPCA.

The volunteers/staff at Rosedene were very kind people to all of these animals. The dogs were all loved and treated with the upmost respect and their welfare was always top priority. The kennels may not have been brand spanking new but they all had runs, beds and were clean, they all had toys etc and were taken for numerous walks daily. Not one of the dogs ever behaved like dogs that had been in kennels for a long time as they were treated by the staff as one of the family.

I think it is disgusting what the RSPCA and police have done. This kennels had yearly licensing and the dogs that the RSPCA couldn't/wouldn't take were always found space at Rosedene.

As regards the 3 poor dogs destroyed, these poor animals were probably scared to death of all the commotion of such a hi handed raid and how very typical of the RSPCA, if in doubt lets put it down! I have long a go formed the opinion that the RSPCA are only concerned with animals they can earn £ off and not those than genuinely need a bit of TLC.

Rosedene have my full support and they have a page on facebook.

THIS KENNELS NEEDS TO BE RE-OPENED FOR THE GOOD OF ALL DOGS FROM THE POUNDS, STRAY, UNWANTED ETC.

Thanks for your post Orton. Good to have the view of someone who has been there. Those stacked cages they show in that link, are they only for temporary use then as you say they have runs?
Will be interesting to see how the RSPCA justify their actions, I am sure there will be more details on their "raid" in the future.

I think they are possibly old pics as the very first time I went to Rosedene they had a small building a sort of porta cabin that they used as an office if I remember rightly and that was where the small pens were but they were mainly used for small animals as they used to have a few cats then. On another occasion I did see a few small Yorkie types in those but over the years I haven't since seen those in use and a new building went up as an office as well. They had new kennels as well in a side off building and those were brand new. All of the kennels had runs, some had indoor and outdoor facility. The majority of the place was quite ageing but it was always kept clean. It wasn't like some places I've been to where the smell hits you before you get in there if you know what I mean. They really did try and make the place better each year. The concrete floor and walls were regularly re-painted, the cage work of the doors and side panels on quite a few were old looking but again safe.

This is something that has really got my hackles up as I mentioned the place was aged but continually they were trying to update and most importantly the animals were cleaned up after, fed well, walked and loved by really genuine staff/volunteers. This place hadn't got the funding that the RSPCA has but it was looking after the animals and they were in a safe environment and receiving excellent care.

It would appear that the RSPCA condemn anyone or any welfare group that hasn't got their million pound set ups.

Just incredibly sad for the dogs that now face a very uncertain future in the hands of the RSPCA and very sad for the dogs that have lost a potential safe haven in Rosedene
