Rosie update

Rosie had a bit of an uncomfortable night, pacing round but not in any obvious pain. She slept beside me but decided that she was far more comfy stretched out over me, with her belly across mine. She slept like that for about five hours on and off.
She's clearly very upset and shaken though

and has decided she only likes women? Maybe down to the fact it was nurses who cared for her and fussed her and the male vets who did all the injecting etc etc? I don't know, but she's peeing and shaking whenever a man goes near her. So OH's been sitting on the floor with an exciting squeaky ball in his hand letting her come to him to play and making lots of fuss of her.

She did a nice big poo this morning

Then this afternoon came out for a wander round the lounge, lay down on the floor and started whining and squeaking

but I'm told this isnt something to panic about, unless she's in obvious pain. Once I went to her side she settled again and has fallen asleep on my knee. So it's still meds and lots of TLC.


Looking into insurance, I took out a policy but not too sure what they're like on paying out as I've not heard of them before? certainally not the cheapest, but the best in terms of value for money as we wanted a few different things from it. They're called Animal friends insurance, has anyone heard of them? I'm still able to cancel if need be....
 
Animal friends are fab insurers. We have all our house pets insured with them and have had to make a number of claims both on the dog and cats policies. They have always paid with no fuss at all.
Im really glad to hear she is home and om the mend, fingers crossed her recovery is speedy!
 
It may just take time but she is home so will be a happy puppy I'm sure!! Tell your OH to take it slow and she'll come around, Must be frustrating for him. Good to hear she is getting there.
Dexter is also much better although not impressed with the little and often meals!!
 
Hi Charlie, all I can really do is point you in the direction of the advice I gave you on the forum and via PM back in November.

Sorry to repeat myself, but all dogs, especially puppies, do pick up stress, worry, frustration, anxiety, all sorts of vibes, from us humans, and as before, while it is hard under some circumstances not to get into a state, sometimes all these things are palpable from your posts. So it may be that is is filtering through to the dog.

If she was fairly out of it whilst she was at the vets I think she is unlikely to be making a male/female distinction, probably just clingy with you because she is feeling under the weather. I remember though you said your OH had problems relating to Jack and perhaps there is something about him that dogs pick up on, it can happen. Just ask him to give her space for now, let her make the advances to him etc and not the other way round. As CC says dogs do pick up on stress etc so maybe she is picking up on that. Did you ever establish if she had eaten the foil cake tray or was it just tinsel that caused the problem?
 
Great news! So glad she is home and well! Do you know what caused the problem? (sorry if I missed an update).

With respect to her behaviour, try as much as you can to ignore her a bit. I know this sounds really harsh and you want to cuddle her and re-assure her, but by cuddling her you may be re-inforcing her worries. Try to be a bit cool, especially when she whines (ignore her, get on with something else, walk out of the room if necessary). Of course you should stroke her and cuddle her, but only when she seems more confident and settled.
 
EKA: Thankyou, I think petplan was the cheapest and thats who we've ued before but their cover is limted, and this insurance company seems to cover much more for just a little extra cost.
Mattilda: No, Rosie doesnt like the 'little and often' either, and turned her nose up at the prescription food at first. However now she's eating a whole spoonful at a time and having been offered nothing else has resigned herself to the fact it's that or go hungry. She had a little scrambled egg (as recommended by the nurse) for her tea and loved it

CMT: yes he was male, VERY tall... like OH and very imposing in stature. OH kind of took Rosies dislike to him a bit personally this morning, and I had a couple of hours of "But why doesnt she like me? what have I done?" before I sat him down with his beer and his RSPCA 'dog training' book and he got the idea

and no, she's from a totally different breeder to Jack, none of their lines are the same.

CC: I am such a worry wort, and I know.... I need to calm right down. She's actually much better this evening, OH having hand fed her her scrambled egg, she's now chosen to sit with him instead of me and is enjoying lots of strokes. I've kept your advice and I recon perhaps earlier she was still just abit shaken? and perhaps her tummy was still sore and she just didnt understand. She seems much brighter just in the last hour alone.

Murphy'sminder: OH is... erm.. (hard to explain) but quite an imposing person. Gentle isnt his way.... he has hand like shovels and a naturally very deep voice, he also stands at 6'4 and build like a brick poo house. He naturally stoops over dogs and leans down to them, and I think with such small dogs even when he gets right down he's neve at their level. We have got the guideance of a very good trainer / breeder (and now friend) but guss what... they're away for new year and I really didnt want to disturb them with this... (they don't know she's been in the vets yet as didnt want to upset or worry them).
It was just the tinsel. The xrays came up clear.
Booboos: yes, she ate tinsel. How.. do not ask! it was wrapped around the top bannister (as I hate tinsel).
That's what we're working on, she's doing a very submissive-on-the-floor-with-a-wagging-tail stance so when she does that it;s a case of ignoring and then sitting on the floor and allowing her to come over.
 
Oh Rosie.... I'm glad she's manning up a bit about your OH and seems to be on the mend!

My step dad had a similar problem with our lab to start with, he too has a very imposing voice and a habit of talking to dogs LOUDLY as though they are deaf... with the result that Barney through he was in trouble every time J spoke, until he realised that the big human was a bit special and needed allowances making...

Henry was also a little unnerved to start, but now adores my step-dad so I'm sure Rosie will come round too!
