no hard and fast rules.
it all depends on the rain/sun/growth spurts/type of shelter and when shelter most needed,and of course how pon is looking.
i dont let mine eat it bare by the gate,because this makes mud in the winter.

I have 2 horses in a 3 acre field made into 5 sections with electric tape. I rotate them to each section weekly.
