Rotational fall out hacking!!

please excuse punctuation and spelling, still 1 handed and woozy!

was out hacking sunday before easter on my own, all was good, cantering along, then we hit a wet patch. next thing i know my pony is falling, i'm over her ears, then nothing. next find her on her back trying not to land on me, i curled up and she put hooves around me then waited until i was out the way. i knew i had broken my shoulder so sos call (thank goodness for my mobile!) to yard manager who was trying to find me. in the end ended up walking with my pony 100m or so to a random livery yard to be met by my yard manager. she took one look and dialled 999.

ambulace peops had no idea how i walked as in agony and shoulder literally missing!! 30ml of morphine had no effect. x-ray showed collar bone snapped in 3 or 4 all over the place with large gaps between peices. que emergency surgery (nhs claimed it would heal! consultant horrified as would never heal!!) , which i was bumped then due to easter bumped again!! finally had surgery last thurs, a plate and 7 pins. been in agony since, on highest painkillers for cancer but not helping, kept vommitting. turns out had delayed concussion then had anaesthetic on top (not a good combo).

started to feel but dressing hard and hot so back in to see consultant. seems to be healing but due topast liver problems and c diff the only drugs they can give me is paracetamol and he appologised as realised i must be in agony! i have a huge scar and slung for a month. 6 months to heal so my pony is retired for now (she only had 1 scratch thank goodness!). so tad rubbish. oh and new job hadn't sent acceptance letter so prob no job to go to in june argh!

any ideas for replacement hat and body protector once i'm back up and running? had a charles owen pro II that was fab but did its job and shattered on landing, anything newer and safer?

Hope you recover soon because that looks just awful! You were lucky not to have been killed, and what a lovely horse trying not to land on you.

wow really very brave!! I would say the aerowear body protectors are comfy, very good quality and very safe, hat wise i forked out for an HS1 and will never look back... may be wrong but think it is the safest hat on the market, and looks pretty swish so although maybe not as safe as missing out on riding altogether i like to think i am pretty good... I really hope you feel better soon, very impressed your already preparing for your return!
 
Oh bu&&er! That was a fall and a half hun. Good that you are, almost, okay, comparatively, and that your horse is alright.

Can't imagine the pain you're in (well, a rough idea) and hoping that it eases off very, very soon.
 
Ouch!

My horse fell hacking - straight onto my shoulder but fortunately I just had a lot of bruising and swelling.

I had an HS1 hat - great, very comfy and went and bought myself a Rodney Powell back protector with shoulder pads. It looks like a straight jacket but is great to wear.

If I'd fallen now I might have been tempted with an air jacket.

Goodness that looks horrific and sounds incredibly painful! Poor you! Glad you at least managed to walk to help, I can't imagine the pain you must have been in and glad your pony wasn't hurt.
 
You poor thing. That xray is awful! My husband fell off one of my horses and broke his collarbone in just one place. He said it was the most painful thing he had ever experienced, so you are really brave! I've had a couple of rotationals, and they are very scary and dangerous. I was very lucky not to be seriously hurt.
 
crikey, you poor thing, what an utter nightmare. as for hats, whatever has the highest protection AND is comfy, i love HS1s but they don't fit everyone. ditto, love my Kan bp, but try on a few and see what is the most comfy.
vibes for a speedy recovery. maybe a TENS machine might help?
 
thank you all such a shock, you hear of these falls whilst jumping but not often hacking or on the flat!

i have been advised the hs1 a few times now so think i'll go with that. body protector wise i'm really looking at the shoulder protection, as with a titanium plate now fitted in my shoulder, although stronger, if it shifts in another fall it's right next to a major artery and nerves having fatal consequences.
 
Race Safe level 3 (purple lable). You can buy shoulder guards with them too that you can take off from the BP if you want to.
Glad you're both ok (ish), and hope you have a speedy recovery!
 
Jeeeebus that's some x-ray. Poor you, hope you get the pain management situation sorted, and you start to heal up good and quickly. Well done for being so in control of the situation as well, I don't think I would've handled it as well as you did!
 
Ouch!!! I broke my collar bone, 5 weeks ago tues, only in one place and it in line but near the shoulder joint, and it was bl**dy agony!!!!! And they still not sure if it actually healing so may operate later down the line grrrrr!! And mine was a very near rotational out hunting, somehow my clever horse managed to just about stay up right (his leg got caught in sheep wire goin over a fence but luckily I think shoe pulled off at last min, the feeling that we were about to tip over was not nice!!!) have just got back on and had a 30 min walk hack 2day. But my advise for protection would b the same hat you allready had or another Charles Owen as like you said it did it's job and they fit you. I was due a new body protecter anyway and manger to try and buy a Racesafe level 3 one at Badminton on sun, was still a bot off struggle getting on and off as tight, so would suggest with the BP that you wait untill got a lot more movement and are dressing etc then try various ones on and see which is most comfy! And dressing is not at all easy I was in joggers or shorts with elastic waistbands and for top half a size too big vest and tank tops, pull up the way then slide arms in, and didn't have the arm straps on my bras up for about 3.5 weeks? (still sometimes with bra) huge hugs and healing vibes, can't believe you can only take parcetamol as well, I was on codeine and ibrufen for about 3 weeks and still sometimes ibrufen. X
 
oh tell me about it, i have to be washed by mum and i'm 25 now!!

hope you heal soon. consultant and aneasthetist haven't done this surgery in 5 years untill last week and then there were 4 of us!! 2 of us horse riders. had to find a specialist surgeon as well. they predict 4-6 months until riding. sling for 3 weeks and 6 weeks of physio after :(
 
Ouch - hope you start to feel better soon! Don't worry about the scar - my daughter had a plate in her shoulder 3 years ago following a broken collar bone and shoulder blade (came off a 4 year old onto hardcore), and the scar is hardly visible now.

Ooh you poor sod, that looks bloody painful.
Hope you are in less pain soon, the prospect of 4-6 months off riding is quite depressing in itself :(.
 
You poor thing, that sounds awful. I really hope you start feeling better soon.

Interesting thread regarding hats, have looked up the HS1 and seen its a skull cap, I like the look fo it but worry with skull caps not having the peak at the front. Any views on pros and cons of skull caps versus peak caps???
 
Yep Ella I'm 25 as well, luckily I just about mangaged to wash myself (bit stubborn) alltho always made sure some one in the house and had painkillers inside, and luckily we have a good power shower, no way could I have got out off the bath! Mainly had to get her to tie my hair up and brush it! As it started to feel better I worked out a technique off sitting on floor sliding arm along bed then bending head towards it lol! Did my right one and v right handed! Sleeping was one off the worse lots off cushions!!! And the fact that you get tired easily! Yer I don't actually mind if they operate just prefer they do it sooner than later! And ditto don't worry about the scar I ve got a rather good scar on my elbow from breaking it fairly well when younger, and the scars now adays alot neater! Got 2 little ones on my knee from an arthroscopy and dr apologised loads, they def prefer to try not and scar now, I just think off them as battle wounds anyway, shows we done something, lol! (sorry can't quote on phone) x

Total sympathies for waiting for an operation and now having plates etc to contend with, I'm recovering from having wrecked my leg at the end of 2010. Bet those days in hospital waiting for the op were hell.

Morphene in the ambulance? Next time (ok touch wood there won't be a next time) ask for gas & air. Not supposed to be as powerful but my paramedic swore by the stuff and said he had a big rugby player who mangled himself good and proper have both, and reckoned the morphene wasn't worth it. I only had antenox (gas & air) and my god it helped!

There's lots of things you can do to help your bones to heal faster, in terms of your diet and nutrition, herbal, and homeopathic remedies. PM me if you would like to know what I used.

For the pain I had morphine patches that lasted a week at a time. They were fab! Ask your doc if you can have those as they don't tend to offer them. I felt sick on the Tramadol too o had anti sickness tablets to stop the sickness.

Hope your feeling better soon as hopefully your healing time will fly by! :D

i couldn't have enternox as i couldn't breath in deep enough, they did try but i couldn't get it in!

i'm a bit of a pain in that morphine patches would make me sick and i can't have the cyclasine anti sickness tabs as they make me vommit too! we've tried everything, the blooming c difficile i caught 2 years ago wrecked my gut and all i can take now is paracetamol :( . nice idea though!
