I have taken the Spanish boy to the Suffolk show for the past two years, so year 3 came today. Firstly my OH had decided he wasnt going to come as he was 'too busy' at work, so it was a case of go on my own or not at all. No. 1 horse decided he was not going to go on the lorry on his own, so I had to drag No.2 horse out of field, who loads like a dream. so,instead of 1 horse and 2 people, it ended up as 1 person and 2 horses!.

Got a good parking space at the show ground, unloaded both who were quiet. tacked No.1 up to go and warm up, put No.2 back on lorry. so far so good. Then, No.1 decided he couldnt possibly walk on the tarmac. Then his whole world came crashing down. As we tried to find the warm up arena, all the four in hand carriage horses appeared. not one, but about nine! he went bananas - reared and reared and reared. Meanwhile, joe public and kiddies want to take his picture, whilst nearly getting killed. Why, why oh why does the committee allow the B****y public around the horse/stables/warm up area? He nearly leapt on a push chair and squashed a dad. I have to say mine wasnt the only going nuts, there were others!. Feeling a bit sick by now, I decided to take him into the warm up area, where he proceeded to perform airs above the ground. luckily I had a balance strap on otherwise I would have hit the deck for sure.

He isnt normally like this at all - I guess it was sensory overload, but I was so annoyed about the stupidiy of the non horsey public. I was then asked to leave the warm up area as he was upsetting the others. Believe me, I was desperate to get him out too!. however. a kind lady (not) decided to grab his bridle to lead him out, when he went up telegraph pole style and nearly knocked her over. After this, i tried to make my way back to the lorry (almost in tears) on the way back the local hunt came towards us, blowing their horn, followed by a pack of donkeys pulling carts. I had just dismounted to tie him up at this time - and i felt he was so stressed i thought he was going to throw himself on the floor.

The upshot of all this was that i decided not to enter my class, and take him home. I was really upset as you can imagine. I had no 'groom' either, so would have had to have untacked him to show him in hand, and get back on again. (I watched my class after putting him back on the lorry).

So. lessons learned
1. Just becuase your horse has seen it all before, he might react differently another time
2. Dont go on your own, with two horses
3. Shoot your OH for being uncooperative

And, to cap it all, one of the numnahs fell off the saddle rack on the lorry and No.2 horse P***ed on it........:(

Agree with all of the above!! I hate days like that when everything goes wrong, gotta laugh really. I always say 'at least i'm back in one piece', then the other half does the whole dangerous horses chit chat.......lol!!

Glass of wine and some Cadburys deserved!

Oh no you poor thing :( the last bit did make me laugh talk about the icing on the cake!!
I know how you feel I sometimes end up going to shows alone with just the one horse mind, and it makes it so much more stressful. You always need an extra pair of hands if i was around i'd have gone with you ;)
On the plus side you got through it and next time it has to be better!

I feel your pain! We all have days like that when nothing goes right. Never mind, onwards and upwards. Spoil yourself tonight and slap your OH with the p*ssed on numnah. It will make you feel a helluva lot better. :D

ohhhhh poor you that was a crap day but how wise to say "ok ill call it a day" good for you hun there - and it just goes to show they are animals and not machines but hey next time may be your day - big hugs and oi you look to next show hun xx

I was a spectator yesterday and had a couple of friends competing in the Pleasure Driving class. What a nightmare! Helicopters overhead, class running 45 minutes late, but not told until in the warm up ring where they were joined by the hunt!!! One of my friends horses is ride and drive and hunts regularly. He did not want to trot in his show, thought canter would be preferable, highly understandable in the circumstances. He probably thought hunting with carriage attached was a new class!!!!

I cannot believe how badly organised it is for such a large event. A recipe for disaster. How can having helicopters flying over live stock be ever considered a good idea? How can they not organise a runner to let people know when classes are running so late to stop over anxious horses and competitors being stuck in the warm up area for so long?

Really sorry you had such an awful experience. I am sure you weren't the only one.

OMG that sounds like a nightmare day  Glad you and the horses got back safe and sound eventually. We have a local show that does helicopter rides and I have complained but to no avail. The helicopters must make a lot of money for the show I guess but flying them over the horse rings seems like madness and I've voted with my feet (and hooves) and will never go there again

Bless you :(, they can "really" do your head in sometimes, at least no one got injured and maybe next time you will have great time, nature of the horsey game.

God horses are so frustrating! My little Lusitano part bred can be a complete stress head at shows that sometimes, I have to just pack him back into the trailer and go home 'cos once he has wound himself up he can't de-stress, very frustrating but there is always another day (finances providing)!!

Crikeys!!! I'm so surprised public are allowed down to stables and warm up areas still. Especially with h & s on the case.

Have to say I wouldn't have ridden with those apaches going into the air every 10 mins.

I heard the helicopters were around for the lead rien class and there were a few falls.
We were going to go to the Suffolk but the pony wasn't ready, I think I will give it a miss.
I think you need a G&T.

My two very rarely get perturbed at anything, but even then taking the two of them on my own is fraught with problems. I had them in successive classes at one county show and the second one couldn't be left in the box as her back tightens up. So she seemed quite happy tied up outside with the man next to us keeping an eye on her. Cue me in the line up in the ring on Horse 1 hearing over the tannoy, "Will the owner of the bay gelding which has presented itself to the secretary's tent please come and collect it". So embarrassing, however they had described a black mare as a bay gelding so I pretended it was nothing to do with me, although I could see her in the distance.

By the time I went back to my box on Horse 1, someone had loaded her and so I simply swapped them over, hoping no-one would recognise her. She was at least nice and loose in her back after her walk around the showfield. I suppose she had only gone looking for the other one and sensibly taken herself to the secretary's tent when she couldn't find the way!
