Has anybody had their horses's hip x-rayed, or quotations to do so, who doesn't mind saying how much it was?

My boy fell in January and although vastly improved he's still got some stiffness in his left hind which appears to be coming from the hip. There is a chance that he may have damaged the joint but it could be arthritic changes (23yo) or a chip from the fall or something else entirely. We may not even see anything on the xrays. It could just be that the area is taking a long time to recover from the shock of the fall and that the initial fast rate of progress has tailed off as so often happens.

Part of me is thinking ignorance is bliss because he's doing well and is happy and if I knew that there was something in there causing him pain and couldn't afford treatment I would have to consider PTS (insurance wouldn't cover). He has SCENAR and Bowen and bioresonance and has been improving so if that continues I won't stress about it. I should add that he isn't ridden although we've started a very slow rehab program to try and strengthen his body and ultimately the aim would be to see if he can cope with ridden work down the line.

I'd just like a rough idea so I can keep it in the back of my head as an option.

I don't think it is possible to X-ray the hips due to the thick muscles surrounding the joint (the x-ray machine would not be able to generate enough radiation to penetrate the area). I think you would need a radionuclide bone scan which is done at specialists vets

Talk to your vet about an internal rectal ultrasound, this would be relatively cheap and may pick up the problem. I have seen this used to diagnose a fractured pelvis.
