Hello,
Can anyone give me any idea of approximate cost of scoping for ulcers and if positive cost of gastroguard ? My Pony came to me after being turned away for a few years, during this time I know he became very thin over the winters although picked up in summer, he definitely didn't have enough forage over the winters - he was given no additional hay or feed and wasn't rugged. Since coming to me the main issue has been keeping weight off but I have made sure he had plenty of soaked hay and access to oat straw, free access to shelter and lots of turnout on a track. He looks well, seems happy and content behaves impeccably under saddle but remains very girthy on tacking up. I have had his back checked, he has a new properly fitted saddle but I wonder if his previous malnourishment may have left lasting stomach ulcers. He is not insured and doesn't seem bothered except initial girthing but if it is not stupidly expensive I feel I should look into it. Thanks !

The cost of scoping is around £300 depending on whether your vets come out to do it, if they have a scope or whether you go in, ours was done by a vet who travels out to clients so cost a bit more than taking them in but was less stressful for the horse. It is the cost of treatment that is the main expense, Gastrogard is about £30 per day, usually a 4 weeks course on full dose then a reduced rate for the next 4 weeks.
There are various things that you can try that may help if he has them but if being a bit girthy is the only symptom I would probably give him a little longer and see if he gets better, possibly try a different girth and a tiny feed before tacking up to see if that helps.

I was recently was quoted £170 to sedate and scope ( on a special offer ) and paid £470 for four boxes of gastrogard .

Be careful how you go about the scoping. My vets got a specialist down to their practice to do it and he charged £400 just for the travel. Each scope worked out at over £700 which horrified me when i got the bill. They never gave me the option to take my boy to someone which would have cost about £60 in fuel. My gastrogard is £153 for a box of 7 but my boy has been on it for 7 months now! Admittedly hes only on 1/4 tube a day now but its not cheap
