I use mine quite a lot before I got a manege - it was a restricted area for starting youngsters. Since I had the manege I still use it but less for training (except catching, if horse is difficult because it is a really good limited area to keep them moving until they accept you catching them) more for introducing new horses, and keeping horses safely contained for whatever reason. Depends what you want to do TBH
Thanks for the reply's. I do use a round pen with my horses and have found it good but i have had a few people say to me that it puts strain on the horse in a physical way and that the horses cant move away from u in the same way as they would in the arena especially if u are doing things such as desensitisation and that it can be a form of flooding, and was just wondering what other people thought on round pens and the effect on horses when using them.

It doesn't matter what way you work with your horse, someone is going to have an opinion on it and whether it's right or wrong. It depends how you work with your horse, whether you can read the horse and know when to stop when it's becoming too much etc. Yes you can put strain on them, but you can put strain on them through poor lunging, poor schooling, poor riding. Everything.
My words for describing round pens is 'they are handy'. I use mine initially for starting youngsters but I quickly move onto working them in the arena and then get them out on the trails as soon as possible once they have directional, start, stop etc
What size is your round pen? Mine is 65ft and that size works fine for me. I don't do an awful lot on my round pen but as I say, it is handy to have.
