Round hay bale

I have just moved to a yard where we have to supply our own hay and as I have always had this included in the price of my livery I am a bit clueless as to how long it will last me. It’s a round bale of meadow type hay (the thin soft hay) of good quality. The bale is approx. 4.5ft in diameter by about 5ft high. I reckon I am feeding about 22lbs a day, my horse is 17.1hh M/W gelding. I don’t know the weight of the bale, sorry. On looking at it, as a very rough guess, it looks like I have taken about two fifths of it in ten days.

I have it stored under cover on pallets with a loose tarpaulin around it - I understand this is the best way to store it. It cost me £30. It really is very nice hay from this year.

As a rough guide, there are 10 - 12 small bales in a large round, so maybe tht will help?

Mine usually lasts me between 31/2-4 weeks, 2 large hay nets a day.

Think they are roughly the equivalent of 12 normal sized bales of hay.

We feed 4 x 16 hh horses for about 5 days out of a big bale.

our horses are currently getting a combined weight of 48lbs hay per day, 1 round bale lasts 2 weeks so i would guess yours will last just over a month

Depends how much you feed 1 round bale will last my 16hh TB 4-6 weeks.

Same here. I have two that live out, and they get hay twice a day. I get through 2 round bales a month.
