OH works mornings on a farm ,so we get our hay relativly cheap, we have big round bales . we store onley one at a time at yard because of lack of space, in winter we fill the back of the pickup every day and take back to the field for the horses (3 miles) each way to save time doing this every day we have been thinking of puting the whole bale in a feeder like for cattle. Does any one else do this?. have seen horse feeders like this but cattle ones are a lot cheaper. what do you think

We have always just put the round bales straight into the field, but they do tend to get a bit wasted when the bale is almost finished, so we are going to get the round cattle feeders this winter.

I use the small sheep round feeders but I put rubber matting all the way around so they dont get caught up,then every day peel the webbing down from the top of the bale so they dont waste it.Works for me anyway.I did use a cattle round feedr one winter but the horses went bald in the middle of their manes where it was rubbing on the bar so thats why I changed.

Agree with above, use a sheep feeder rather than a cattle feeder as I have chased a horse dragging a feeder round the field after he stuck his head through the gaps and as they had eaten the side out of the bale it moved and trapped his head - not much fun! Have also had to do it with a charolais bull and he was easier!
Mine have eaten out of sheep ring feeders for 15 years with no mishaps.

sheep feeder sounds the way to go, thanks!! I was also worried about them geting their heads caught and panicking as they are not the brightest bunch!

Hi, we use a square type pen made of 4 metal fences, they are cheap to buy from our local feed merchant, have you seen those before?

I'm liking these sheep feeders. I usually put the bale in the field and a lot gets wasted as some joker always uses it as a trampoline or starts tiddling on it

Its amazing how litle they actually eat and how much they use as a toilet/ bed, might still have to take some out to make an extra pile as arab wont eat right next to the others, two of them bully him (poor boy).

Hadn't thought of using a sheep feeder before. What a great idea. What would people put round this to avoid the chance of them getting legs stuck in it?
