.... Bales of Haylage?

Can get big bales of haylage, you know the very large ones, for £20 good quality stuff? This winter i have paid £20 for large round bales which tbh isnt very good stuff and i am wasting a quater of a bale each time! So i know somebody who is doing big square bales and am wondering is there as much in the squares as there is in the round?? I have had 30 round so in instance next year will i be okay just to order or 30 or maybe an extra ten of the square?

How long is a piece of string? It completely depends on how many kgs of hay is in the rounds and how many kgs are in the squares. My rounds are 650kgs and my squares are 250kgs but my neighbours squares are 440kgs and I doubt his rounds are anywhere near the weight of mine, probably more like 500kgs.

You need to ask the farmers what weight their respective bales are.

The square bales can come in different sizes but as a general rule of thumb they are a bit smaller in content.

However, I personally prefer them because if you don't have a tractor you can open the square bales at the end so the sides remain sealed and just take it out each day in slices. You do not need to move the bales at all. I usually only cut three sides of the end so i can put the end back up after taking the amount of slices out I need and secure it with a couple of bricks on top of the bale so no rain gets in.

Not as good if you are using nets as the corners get quite compacted so you need to shake these out otherwise your nets get destroyed. Perfect for hay bars though and makes less mess than a round bale

Hope that helps
