Royal Ascot

Im just really struggling with it more and more.

What gives us the right to subject these animals to practices which are so, so gruelling on their bodies?
I used to love a day out at the races but just can't do it / support it anymore. Both jumps and flat have things they could do better to improve welfare but they won't do it coz it risks their investment 😡

I was watching that race with the poor 2yo Harry's Girl and was focusing on the horse to its left as I'd picked that.

What I saw, it looked like 'my' horse got a left handed smack and swerved right into HG into the back of HG near fore. Immediately after that poor HG broke down.

Such a sad incident.

Omg how incredibly sad if that is the case. Although I suspect by that point it was going to go at any time anyway.

I'm so annoyed that it was her 3rd race as a two year old.

Not been watching today but switched on for the Gold Cup. Dubai Future has had some winnings and looks to have a sense of humour
I never watch racing but I just watched that race where Trawlermen won, he raced his heart out yet still got whacked!! That is what annoys me! Your way out in front and still whipping, think they should be abolished completely.

I agree with this.

Laying a Whip across an exhausted horse really doesn't sit well with me.

I don't think whips should ever be used to go faster.

Im not against them carrying a whip for a tap down the shoulder to keep them straight or whatever, but hate seeing them whipped into the finish.

Exactly my thoughts too, when the horse is already giving everything there is absolutely no need 😔

After reading this I went back and rewatched race twice, I think you are being a little unfair to jockey, he used whip once and then waved back but did not strike…and Trawlerman certainly did not seem exhausted…

I rewatched it too. On computer so not the best but I thought twice as the second horse was coming up at the furling marker and the rest was waving whip. Horse looked pretty fresh for 2.4 miles though of course blowing well. Had his nose undone and water over him. That said I’d happily see whip gone

Each to their own, I dont think so.

Having had a horse that was treated like this too. Racing his heart out and whacked to hell… I personally do not like it. That is my opinion 😊

To be clear, my comment was just generalising the use of the whip coming into the finish of any race.

I did not mean this particular horse was necessarily exhausted, just that seeing an already tired horse receive a crack with a whip was unsettling to me.

Whipping a horse who is still full of running and trying his best, also goes against what I believe is fair and moral.

I simply do not think whips should ever be used as a means of going faster. It's ick.

I liked that statement from Will Buick after the race about Trawlerman (ITV).

I can't remember the exact text but it was something like "I dropped the reins and let him go as he wanted as he knows more about pace then I do"

JG also was nice about the horse and said he's a bit of a yard favourite as he's been with them so long.

I think that racing has got a fairly good balance at the moment in regard to whip use. They have disqualified and suspended for 14 days the winner of the Ladies Amateur race at York last saturday for 4 strikes of the whip over the permitted limit.

I also watched his interview and I agree with you, I wasnt implying he overly whipped, but since the horse was racing his heart out and was so far in front already, my point was there was no need to whip at all.

what a lovely winner of the first race, she looks so sweet (Venetian Sun). For the noseband watchers, (presumably) the travelling head lad asked the groom to undo it on the lead in and she just generally looks a lovely horse. They did just say she cost 240,000 guineas in Book 1, so well bred and smart looking.

Those cocktails look delicious especially the strawberry one!

Venetian Sun was so pretty and like how they got the noseband undone asap. Would have given her best turned out too, love the quarter marks

The fact they haven't relaxed the dress code in this awful heat

As an aside I DESPISE that Audi advert have to mute it every time

Is the Audi advert the one where they are sitting in the car singing - if so I mute it and didn't know it was Audi. We have some breeze here today so hopefully there is at Ascot as well.

She was beautifully turned out wasn't she.

Yep, thats the one - they sit in the car and chant i like to move it over and over, have to instantly mute it

This filly doesn't look that hot at all! Good to see another noseband undone

Sorry, it might be the wrong thread but I couldn't find the thread about '' riding in hot weather '' anywhere..

I am leading a flat horse tomorrow in Zürich Switzerland

He is running at 4pm over 2600m with a top weight of 67kg, he has no chance with that weight, he also doesn't like hard ground...

The forecast is 33 degree with no wind and i am wondering what i could do regarding cooling him off better so he is more comfortable ??

We have water buckets available in the parade ring. 13 starters and only 5 showers so if you aren't quick, you have to wait before hosing down....

He wears full black blinkers, the trainer insist on putting them on wet, saying it's better for him. With that heat, they will be dry in second anyway.

He is a very sensitiv, excitable horse and sweat a lot, i don't support racing but i am doing it to make sure he is the most comfortable and hopefully stay calm.

Some trainers wet the horse leg and belly just before the jockey mounting, is that helping ?

Some of them have a little cap with ice on the poll, is that any good ?

Obviously, we put the blinkers at the last moment, just before entering the parade ring and i take them off as soon as i got him back

Any tips or ideas welcomed !

Last year, some meetings were cancelled due to the heat, i doubt, they will cancel tomorrow ( shame...) as it's biggest and most lucrative meeting of the season...

I think the long distance races at Ascot seem mainly to have been around 5 pm which is when it’s been as it’s hottest. They have said that they haven’t had any heat related issues with any of the runners so I hope yours will be okay.

Oops with the sheet!! Hope he doesn't get injured running loose

Feels a bit sickening Wathnan winning several races when they seem to be buying horses anytime one has won
