Royal Canin dog food???

I ordered some from the vets today and after looking at reviews on the internet, quickly cancelled it again.

Does anyone on here feed it.... It was the obesity diet that I ordered... Zak needs to lose a kilo (to go from 9.4 to 8.4 ish).

Can anyone give me any recommendations or tips for weight loss for him

I used to feed the junior variety but it did nothing for their condition so switched to Arden Grange (which has a lo-cal variety)
Other people on here use it with success.

What age is he and what is his exercise regime? Does he get treats?
 
He is an 8 years old miniature schnauzer

Weight sheet in the vets says he should weigh 9k but at 9.4k he still looks decidedly solid

He has arthritic elbows, but no other arthritic changes.... but has been x-rayed today as he has a sore back (thats how we ruled out other bony changes). But because of the arthritis he cant go for strenuous exercise or for more than about 20mins without limping

I walk for 20 mins in morning, play ball for about 10mins at lunchtime (till he gets bored) and then daughter usually takes him out for 20 mins round roads in evening .... this is about as much as he can cope with

So far as treats go, he did get the occasional one... but not many... but that has now stopped..... mostly he gets a biscuit out of his daily ration so as to not overfeed him.

Not really sure what else to do.... cant do hydrotherapy till we know what is actually wrong with his back.
 
I was going to suggest hydrotherapy...

Mine don't get any treats at all unless they are training and then it is human-grade meat like chicken or ham. How much food is he getting? We all have a tendency to over feed (I know my mother does

Mine are both on restricted exercise at the mo (dog post op, bitch can't get out much because when either of us are home, we are watching dog) and they have a scoop (tin can size) of meal in the morning and one in the evening - they are both fine.
 
He gets a little less that the recommended amount of JWB... 100g which is just tiny.... split into 2 meals as the puppy is still on two feeds a day

try hills jd reduced calorie? my dogs are distinctly less stiff since starting on it.

not sure what you've read about royal canin though. i have used a lot of their ranges and have always been v happy with it.

and yes it is always possible that there is a little something being slipped, but the kids know how important it is that he does not get fatter.... so should be being good

Star....Is that food a vet only one, or can you get it elsewhere.... I dont think my vets sells it (but I suppose they could get it)

I googled Royal Canin reviews and there were some terrible things said about it.... along with some people that love it

MQ I've been on some of those sites - it is horses for courses, different dogs, different foods, it didn't work for my two but some people's dogs don't like AG...my old girl lived on stuff I now know to be not much better than chicken feed but she lived to be a very healthy 14.

Yep.... had the news today that after extensive x-rays (loads of them)!! He has two arthritic elbows..... right one worse than left though...... But none anywhere else

He has lovely stifles apparently!!!

But he must have a soft tissue injury to his back half as he is very stiff and finds stairs a bit of a chore

So we are having rimadyl for a month and if that doesnt fix it, an MRI scan to see what is broken

I feed royal canin to my shibas, have done since Isabel was a baby. Think it is brilliant, Oh and i only pay £39 for it.

Hope you get your little dog sorted. x

it seems a huge reaction to be caused by one feed of a particular dog food too! Either dog is incredibly allegic to one ingredient, had a reaction to something completely unrelated or the owner has some kind of issue with Royal Canin (or is involved with Beneful Dog Food!), either way I wouldn't take too much notice!

I think that some people would never be satisfied with a dried dog food, as it will never be as good a raw meat. So you will always find someone with something bad to say no matter what brand/ingredients/etc it is.

There are only a few feeds I would steer clear of - Pedigree and Bakers being the main two - plus Otto reacts poorly to cereals so I try to feed him on hypoallergenic food.

Anyway, my point is read the back of the packet and make your own judgement as alot of what you read on the internet is tosh

Jasmine... the pet shop ones are probably cheaper anyway.... this one is vet only as its the obesity one... that might make it more expensive

One thought Ihad was to bulk his food out with diced veg.... that way he will feel fuller and not look so depressed with his portion sizw

Try your vets for the Royal Canin, OH's practice is actually cheaper than any of the on line suppliers for it - he checked as our dog was on it until recently.

We have the opposite problem for weight - can't keep weight on the dog as if he gets enough food to maintain weight (well over recommended amount as he does a lot of exercise) he gets the squits. Now on Chappie as it is less rich, suits him better but still squitty if he's doing a lot of exercise and is losing weight!
 
I don't know a lot about RC I'm afraid, but just wanted to mention that imo the recommended feeding amounts on bags are often way too high.
My 3 GSDs are on Skinners Field & Trial. According to the bag, for their weight they should be having around 400g per day. The 2 older bitches are on 210g and even my 13 month old loony, who is never still, only has 380g. They are all a good weight, in fact the oldest at 11 is maybe a little podgy.
I realise you are feeding a diet feed so quantities might need to be a little higher but I do think recommeded amounts need looking at carefully.
I don't know if it is frowned on nowadays (feeding practices change so much) but if we wanted to give a dog more to eat without them gaining weight we used to put bran in their food.

i've used royal canin for my big dogs to help with joints and never had problems. all the vets at the pratice we use feed their dogs on it too and i shouldnt think so many would stock it if it was deemed to have problems. also £62 is an awful lot i paid about £45 for mine from vets but not the one you need but i buy supplements from this website and they have rc obesity food for £45 too.

hills jd is prob £60 a bag as well. I pay £45 but that's cost price direct from the wholesaler. never heard of royal canin making dogs itchy - certainly not had any complaints about it from our clients.

Anyway, I have decided to up the exercise (within reason) and down the food slightly..... more to do with making double sure that no one is slipping him treats

.... actually weighing the food and not just using the beaker etc.

Will give it a month (have about a month of diet JWB left anyway, which will go to waste otherwise) and see how it goes

Star, Its good to hear from you that no one has said their dogs are itchy..... but is the weight loss a good one too

the weight loss diet works for sure. i think you can probably get same results from cutting down normal food and bulking out with veggies though
