Hi all
New pup arrives in 2 weeks! Breeder has been feeding Royal Canin junior and recommends we continue for at least the first year to 18 months.... I had been planning to take him onto RAW diet though. WHat would you guys recommend? I was going to go onto something like Natural Instinct for simplicity while he is a pup, and introduce more actual bones etc as he gets a bit older....

Canin for the first week as changing home and diet at the same time could be a bit much. Then onto raw.

What she said. RC is quite poor quality despite the hefty price tag. You can start proper bones, like small chicken wings, just bash them up and hold til he gets the idea. Don't let him inhale them!! Supervise until you're happy (I always supervise as they eat as we prepare our tea)

As above, royal canin for a few weeks as transition- I don't feed RAW like that, but would always advise a sensible change over.

Gorgeous pup!!

My pups are reared on oatibix, scrambled eggs, goats milk, and pup biscuits, with natures menu pouches added in. They stay on four meals until 4 months, 3 meals until 6/7 and I feed all mind twice a day.

They are pretty adaptable- sure he will get on just fine :) I do feed canin pup biscuits but certainly wouldn't be continuing that long! I feed them largely because its what my b1tches will eat straight after ;)

Had the same choice to make and moved pup to raw.

I tried to do a gradual change, but as soon as she had tasted the meat, she wouldn't touch any more RC.

I started NI for simplicity and will move back to usual supplier when pup is a bit older and not on quite so many meals (its easier to feed portions from NI tub, than the usual plastic bag).

Go for Raw, RC is crap. Im going to go against the grain but I would change her straight over. I would speak to the people at Natural Instinct for advice also but here is mine... dont feed dry and raw at the same time, they digest at different rates and doing so can cause problems; Your pup will no doubt be on 4 or 5 meals a day - just start the raw in the morning so he/she has had the biggest gap since eating her last RC meal. Start with something bland and easy to digest for the first few weeks - I recommend the NI chicken puppy. You could then move on to NI Working Puppy - this contains a blend of meats inc offal. The reason for not starting out on this is that the different protein sources and offal can be harder to adjust to for a dog to new to raw. The Working Puppy is a fabulous feed though:) I started my last pup out this way and she is thriving. After 6 months I got brave and moved away from NI and began to make my own meals for all my dogs with Berriewoods minces, fish, my own veg blend and bones from the supermarket etc. When my last pup came home I did intend to keep her on the dry stuff she came with for a week or 2, for all the reasons given above, however she got the skits with the stress of the move anyway and going straight onto the NI puppy chicken had her sorted within 24 hours. Good luck, I hope this helps and congrats:cool:
