to an entire street because of Yorky

I laughed reading the whole thing. Then I got to the end and thought, I'm laughing because I love dogs and I'm not afriad, however if you were - this would be scary! Why aren't the owners doing something to contain the dog? Its totally unacceptable to let it terrorise the postman and disrupt mail for the entire street!

She is very cute though!!

If the dog is harrassing the postman, then fair enough. Its easy enough to put a postbox at the gate and make the garden secure if they must let it out the front of the house.
I do think they are unreasonable, the problem is simple enough to solve, they seem antisocial and irresponsible.

Im a postie, and its my office that has stopped the delivery!!
Problem with this dog is the family! Whilst i appreciate it is only a little dog, it still bites, and the family have told the postman 'just kick it up the ar*s, it won't bite you then'. They won't put up a box, or ensure the dog is kept in, there are of the 'open the front door, kick the dog out and let it walk itself'. Can't say i blame postie for not delivering there!

Charming ! I think they're the ones who need a kick up the backside, they shouldn't be allowed to keep it. I blame them they are idiots

Did you see the posty on the tv this morning ? dunno what dog did it but his leg was really badly scared.

Oh dear.

The Royal Mail refused to deliver to my parents address because of the dogs. My dad called up and asked them why they wouldnt come, when there had been no problems for 11 years (with the dogs), in the end they sent us some risk assessment that cannot of even been carried out on my parents property because it was such a heap of tosh.

My dad just put a box on the external gate because he couldnt be bothered to argue. It took 10 mins to secure it onto a wall, hardly a huge job.

If I lived on that street I would have carted it off to the pound myself! :o

So why aren't the owners being prosecuted for having a dog "dangerously out of control". People laugh but a vicious terrier could actually do a lot of harm to a baby/toddler. I suppose its lucky that they only have a yorkie not a bigger status breed, but the attitude of the owners is typical of some. As many yorkies have horrible mucky teeth I wouldn't fancy being bitten by one, my sympathies lie with the posties.

I agree MM, I know plenty of people with horrible yorkies / JRTs etc... because they are small its 'funny'.

I would rather be in a room with 5 huge muts than one grumpy little one! I wouldnt want a dangerous dog, regardless of size mooching about unrestrained on my street.

I just think it is such a sshame for the rest of the street. It's not their fault, but they have to pay extra costs to get their mail because of one irresponsible owner.
makes my blood boil.

The DM makes it out to be a joke but had the dog been say... a staff or larger breed they would have been telling a different story. I understand the perception is that the smaller dog wouldnt hurt "as much" but I am on the side of the PO. Why should the postie have to put up with being nipped? If the dog is that much of a pain, then make the family put a postbox outside their garden which is locked. Simples!!

My posties know my dogs so well that if they need to deliver, they help block the doorway to reduce over enthusiastic hellos..!

Sorry but they look the type who would find it funny, and think it makes them special. The dog doesnt look in the best condition either, those watery eyes point to a poor diet

No way would I cross a yorkie...Ive seen them in action! Good on Royal Mail. I suspect the whole street will cheer if they get moved on.

I used to be a postwoman and once got bitten by two terriers was rather scary even though they were small! Fortunatly they didn't break the skin (prob due to me not wearing postman shorts!) It was easily solved by a box on the gate and a note with in my rounds sorting station stating that there were dangerous dogs at that address. It's amazing some dogs responce to postmen/women

Worse bite I've ever had was by a Yorkie - she got a hold of the back (tendon area) of my foot and just wouldn't let go! That hurt...

My Rott was also attacked by one, luckily he didn't retaliate but the yorkie's owner had a fit, stood there screaming that her dog was going to be savaged. I had to point out that the only dog bleeding was mine and could she come get her toilet brush on legs and keep him under control

So, yes I can understand the posties point of view!

I haven't read the article but I get the point and it makes me very angry as, as said, was this a staffis or rottweiler etc there'd be a huge issue! This dog sounds aggressive too the same extent, just because it physically can't do the same damage a larger dog can doesn't mean they should be allowed to let it act in this manner. Saying that, if this dog got hold of a smal child it could do some real damage. It irritates me when people think it's funny when a small dog acts like this but a big dog gets a different reaction.

I'd keep it and make it wear a dress :p

I hope that you would give it a bath first :-) Poor little thing looks in dire need of a good bath and a brush.

The owners really ought to use a bit of common sense and responsibility. Sadly, they look the sort who probably think no further than thinking they may get a story in Take A Break.

Ive got all sorts of dogs on my delivery, GS, boxers, collies, jr, staffies, wiemeramamamamas and huge mongrels. The most vicious one - a skanky yorkshire terrier ! The only enjoyment I get from it is posting the post (they've got a glass front door) and holding just a bit to high for it to get it and then letting it go and watching it rip it to bits. The other enjoyment is when it's out and the owners there it's gone for me and as I'm trying to kick it away, I kick the owner, twice I've got him so far. Believe me it's fast and and runs in circles whilst chomping at my leg !

The latest news in tonights paper is that the Royal mail people are now saying they can't be certain it was the Yorkie, but a "terrier type brown dog",
It beggars belief.
I'm sorry I don't know how to do links but it was in tonight's Northampton Chronicle and Echo if you want to have a look.

I used to deal with claims for Royal Mail, and they really can't afford to allow their staff to be bitten by dogs.

They as employers have to ensure that their staff are safe to go about their duties, and if they don't then they have to pay compensation, loss of earnings, medical costs etc plus pay overtime to another postie to do their duty for them. If they know that there is a problem dog at an address and fail to address it then they will be liable.

My DH worked as a postie for a while, he was only bitten once despite doing lots of different rounds as cover. It was a small manky terrier that got him. Unbelievably many owners don't give a toss about controlling their dogs and have little sympathy for the postie. One owner had the gall to tell him that her dog was only being aggressive with him because he hadn't bought a treat for it!!!

It is totally unfair to put postmen and women at risk of injury like this, a fairly minor dog bite can leave a permanent scar and there is a high risk of infection. If your dog is let out in an area where the postman needs to access then unless it is absolutely 100% calm about it don't take the risk, put a mailbox in, if you don't make sure you are well insured!
