RSPCA - charges laid against Gray

I don't see why they can't be specific about the charges brought, but I'm glad to see things moved on to this stage.

What does the Animal Welfare Act do?
It makes owners and keepers responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals are met.

These include the need:

For a suitable environment (place to live)
For a suitable diet
To exhibit normal behaviour patterns
To be housed with, or apart from, other animals (if applicable)
To be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease
The law also increases to 16 the minimum age at which a person can buy an animal and prohibits giving animals as prizes to unaccompanied children under this age.

Anyone who is cruel to an animal, or does not provide for its welfare needs, may be banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison.

More details of how the Act affects people are available here.

I think that he is being charged with 4-5 points in the welfare act..I am JUMPING with joy about the charge and cant stop smiling

I hope (probably in vain) that he gets a decent amount of jail time as a deterrant to others. He wouldn't have the means to pay a large fine (or if he does, we can bet it won't be conventionally discoverable), so without jail time, paying a couple of quid a week will just be a smack on the wrist!

Sorry to put a damper on this but charges may have been laid but he has yet to be proven guilty in a court of law. There's a long way to go yet before any celebrations can be made.

He owns a house in a very expensive area,so i am sure that they will make sure that the fine is paid IF found guilty

I might be naive and a stupid non-blonde but IF he is found guilty i think that they will all get maximum and more than a slap on the wrist, the whole lot have succesfully been charged, which proves that there were evidence all along that we were never informed off, this case is just too big and media coverage is huge and IF they are found guilty the will kick in a and maximum will be given i am sure of it

I don't think that they can take someones family home unless the charges are related to drugs (ridiculously). I'm not a 100% on this, but I think that is the case!

I think they can take any possessions that are gained through the proceeds of any crime, I certainly hope so anyway, as Im sure he could only afford to buy his big house at the expense of those poor animals. I hope you are right PW and they all get the maximum possible if they are found guilty. I am sure the RSPCA were very sure of their evidence before they even impounded those horses, they just had to put it all together in a case which is why it has taken so long. I just really hope that they have got it watertight and that justice is done for those poor animals that didnt survive long enough to enjoy a better life!

The whole case will hinge on quality of evidence, I am sure thats why its taken so long to lay charges.

secondly the the guilty/or not verdict and scale of penalty will depend on the judge. Not all judges will understand about horses, I am thinking about a recent case with redwings, owners got off because their other horses were all in good condition.

Lets hope in this case they get someone in with some knpwledge of animal welfare. With the publicity and photos (and I am sure the public have not been privvy to the full extent of the horror) I am sure even the sternest judge cannot fail to be moved.

On a positive note what about the lovley picture of the colts at Horse trust being turned out after quarantine - that certainly gladdens the heart.
