RSPCA / Groomer vs Dog Owner

If your not prepared to groom a long or double coated dog the simple answer is don't get a breed that has them, there are plenty of breeds out there with short coats that are easy to maintain :( Sad for the dog but it doesn't take long for a coat to get matted.

Unfortunately stories like these. In the salon that I work in owners are constantly saying "don't rump him, I like him fluffy" bearing in mind this dog is matted solid and hasn't seen a brush since the last grooming. Do they really want us to torture their dogs by brushing matts out for hours on end?!! A quote from that article really shows the ignorance of the owners is the part where he/she says she didn't understand why the dog was fully shaved off as if there were matts they would only be on the dogs belly?!?! What the hell?! Matts can be found ANYWHERE on a dogs coat!! And breathe......

You see, I AM too lazy to groom properly. Hence I make sure we go to the salon every month.

That poor dog was in a terrible state beforehand - really not cool :(

GGB - totally agree with you. We have cats coming into work with terrible matted coats and there is no option but to clip them off, this often involves clipping the whole cat apart from the head/feet/tail and we often have to do this under sedation. Yes this is often due to the cats temperament but more often than not the cats skin is so sore underneath the matts it's very painful to do anything but sedate and clip them.

I totally agree that the groomer should of advised the owner what needed to be done and to sign a consent form, to not do this was stupid of her. But the owner was as much and more to blame IMO.

FWIW I think the dog looks lovely now :-)

I think the dog looks so much better and just think how much better it must be feeling.

The only error the groomer made was not getting a consent form signed. I think she has done a lovely job!

No not cool at all - however that's part of what you'd get to look forward to if you DO decide on a career grooming ;) .....errrr, hopefully without the bad press though!

Got lots like this, mostly OES when they were in favour.I can thoroughly recommend having a pair of Lister Stablemate clippers to do a fast job on what is really a fleece.Dog clippers really struggle and take hours. My record for fleece and feet/face off is forty minutes..and a nice tidy job as in the pics too.

misterjay, do moot coats tend to matt? I've always wondered. The sibes don't seem to at all, even when they've been wet and unbrushed several days in a row (and I know D has a very short coat and perhaps wouldn't matt regardless but R has substantial fuzzy trousers :p).

If there is some aspect of the coat that prevents matting maybe the inuit/utonagan folk are on to something after all, they're doing GSDs a favour by improving the coat.

*ducks* :p :D

I would imagine that a mals coat can matt really easily to form a sort of felt undercoat IYSWIM; the undercoat is so soft and thick anyway, you wouldn't have to leave it too long for that to happen, hence why I'm so strict on grooming them properly. Lucky you with your sibes :D

Ok I would have gone MENTAL if someone did that to my GSD without at least having the conversation first...

But then again, my dog would NEVER have been in that state in the first place...

Someone's commented saying "Any decent groomer could have this dog sorted in two hours.""Maybe the trick is NOT giving dogs to 19 year old groomers!" What a moron.

hehe you want some faster shears! I started shearing my big ewes with a Lister Laser horse clipper but with wizzard blades fitted..(same shape as horse baldes, not turned out at the edges like the faster lethal looking ones)they are cumbersome in my small hands, but I can do a ewe stood up like a dog would, in 12-18 mins depending on how high the lanolin is in the fleece & if its not felty...but when i treated myself to some super fast shears, I did my kung-fu fidget bum ewe in 6-8 mins & the nice well behaved ladies in 4! :D Perhaps I should hire them/myself out for situations like this...see if I can make him look like a poodle next time(runs off before I get chased with a Lister Stablemate & gets banned for advertising!):D:D:D

I was mesmerised by someone using a pair of hand shears at the RHS on a sheep - and I thought it would be a good laugh next time to turn up at a grooming competitions (where its only dogs usually allowed) with a "hand scissored sheep in pet trim".

Even better, on a grooming forum there were some photos of weird and unusual client requests for grooms - one of which was a white toy poodle with it's face, ears and legs completely shaved and just the body left in a round ball. It looked like Shaun the Sheep! It was so ugly it was cute!

hehe...if it was an unusually hot summer right now(ok..just a mildly warm, dry one would suffice)...what fun could be had!:D hand shears are very heavy going on the hands inn my exp..tho having said that it can totally depend on the qualiy & size of the hand shears, I have tried them, but only for difficult ones who I don't like to put my clippers at risk with..or risk shearing my legs off! They take a bit of getting used to but once you have a comfy pair, they're ok...but hugely massive admiration for any speedy gonzalez hand shearers as its sooooo MUCH harder, more of a craft/art than a knack..would love to have seen that Shaun the shoop!
